I'm going to buy some 80 grain Barnes TTSX BTs for try in the Winchester/USRA 70 Carbine's 1 in 14" barrel. If they aren't too long, they ought to offer a nice balance of velocity and penetration if they'll shoot good groups.

There was a guy out at the range when I was sighting in a couple guns for deer season and he tried to tell me his 1899 250-3000 had a 1-10" twist. I tried to tell him that all the pre-1960 250's were 1-14" twist and that it must have been rebarreled. He told me no and that he measured the twist himself. Wasn't about to sit there and argue with the guy though (even though I love to argue). ;\)

I thought post mil 99's are 1-10??? Not high enough quality for you guys?

Personally I like the Ruger77 International in 250 but most of them sell for around $900 + (though I saw one sell recently for less than $700). My issues is they never made the Internationals in left handed so I will stick with the 99s!

I just tried the tight patch and tight brush on my Ruger 77R for twist rate. Came up with 11 inch the first time and 11 1/2 the second time. I used a black marker and a piece of tape at the same time. Used a roller bearing type rod.

Also on the top of the barrel it is marked with Ruger company name with no read manual first. On the left side of the barrel it says " Made In 200th Year Of American History". Serial # reads 1976 production date. I have a 1986 77R Tang 300 win mag that reads on top of barrel, Ruger company and also read manual. I looked at Ruger web sight and could only find date of manufacturer not twist rate.

All of the Ruger 77s that I've owned in 250-3000 have had 1 in 10" rates of twist barrels. In fact, all of the .257" bore Rugers that I have had, have had 1 in 10" rates of twist barrels.

Why any manufacturer would opt for a rate of twist that didn't support any of the currently available factory ammo is beyond me, but Winchester/USRA did it when they made the 70 Lightweight Carbines in 250-3000 back in 1986/87. It seems like an "industrial strength" dumb thing to do, but nobody asked for my opinion.

Savage customer service (tech) says that the 250 and 300 Savage both have 1 in 10" rifling. The person could not tell me if or when the Savage website would be updated to show correct rifling twist. Given the expense and procedures for changing something on a production website, I doubt the change will happen soon. The person said it is new for 2009.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but if you are going for the nostalgia of shooting a 250/3000, why not accept the nostalgia of shooting a 250/3000, and deal with the 1-14 twist? ...

The topic subject is A Modern rifle using the 250 Savage IMHO that means a modern rifling twist.

KyWindage, not singling you out. Concept seems like ordering a Model 70 in 45/70, then lamenting that standard ammo manufacturers do not load 45/70 cartridges with full metal jacket bullets at 2000fps. OBTW, the M1920 and M99 are modern rifles. ;\) For someone also shooting 60-75gr bullets, 1:14 would not be bad.

The thread interests me because I went through the same search for a 250Sav at the beginning of this year. My solution was a new M70 USRAC. Discontinued, it was the last one on the shelf of the supplier to my favorite local dealer. A 25WSSM, I intended to reload to milder 250 Savage levels. OP does not reload, not an option. Boring way to go; I should'a bought a $60 strap-on cheek piece for a scoped M1920, and been done with it. Regardless, I felt OP's pain.

Thank you RandyS for checking out that little discrepancy which has bothered us here these few days.

I now can go to my local outdoor dealers and get a great price on one of those MODERN ;\) 250 Savages! \:\)

It will be rechambered to an Ackley Improved and I'll once again be a happy man...

Or just cut to the chase and make a 25 Souper or a 25-284!
