Funny you should ask, back in the day it only took 6 hrs and 45 mins to make it from The Dalles to Winnemucca (lol). That was back in my younger crazier days. I'd say from JV to Winnemucca it is about 2.5 - 3 hrs. Once you get to Nevada the speed limit is 70, but lately I've been passed more than before because I usually have my family in the car.

IIRC from JV, it's 100 miles to McDermitt, and another 70 to Winnemucca. Small casino/restaurnt in McDermitt.
It's been ten years since I ate at either, but the cafe in Rome had wonderful homemade food, and the Basque restaurant in JV was very good too.

We were in Eastern Oregon today and saw rock chucks. First this year.

Yeah that Basque Restaurant in Jordan Valley is about the best food for miles around.. literally...

I don't go there to run into a lot of people tho..

you really want to get away from civilization, that SE corner of Oregon is a great place to do so..

I called some coyotes there while deer hunting when I drew Whitehorse one year...a bunch of deer were feeding in an irrigated pasture complete with the NO HUNTING signs all over the place...

I had just gotten a coyote howler, and tried it out...

got about 7 responses immediately that had to be real real close...

plenty of coyotes out that way..

as I said tho.. when I go out that way...
I stay at the 4Runner Motel, and eat at the Chez Seafire mobile cafe...

From the Google map it looks like about 1.5 to 2 hrs. About right?

There is a Casino in McDermott there, that will be happy to take your money...

You can find jacks south of rome with a lot of coyotes. But i would suggest not going in april, unless it gets very dry early. There are some rds out there that your truck may never be seen again, just a depression with an antenna sticking out. look at your map for 5 points. north of this is the highest concentration of rabbits and coyotes i have seen in years. most of this country is accessable on frozen rds or the heat of the summer. Massive chunks of this BLM are restricted to rd travel only, no off rd vehicle travel. Buy good maps and bring lots of fuel. I love this area and spend as much time as possible hunting it.

I doubt they're frozen, as warm as it has been here in SW Idaho. JV is a higher elevation but still probably not enough higher to keep the ground frozen everywhere.
We have been hitting the 40's here daily.

Here is a good link to the temps and weather in SW Oregon. Scroll down to almost the bottom of the page. Current temps for JV and one other in the area. Click on "station location" and you can see it hit 37 there today at 4PM
