Goose hunt yesterday

Yesterday was Super Bowl Sunday, but probably my last chance for goose hunting for this season...So, too bad Super Bowl...
Had a good time with 2 of my sons and a friend. Birds weren't finishing very well. They get a bit more wary this late in the season. So...it was more shooting and fewer on the ground.
Still we took 10 Canadas and one Snow. Snows are somewhat of a rare occurrence this time of the year where we hunt. They may have been pushed up due to lousy weather to the south.
First thing in the morning, 150 snows came through out of a dense fog. What a rush. They started to bug out. Since we had no Snow decoys out and had no snow goose calls, I guess it's not surprising. So, we took what we could. We got one and another scaled over the ridge to the river. Hate that, but it happens.
Later in the afternoon, a pretty large group of snows of 500 or so circled over us and just wouldn't come into range. My son and a friend worked the Snows for what seemed like an hour. It wasn't, but it sure seemed like it. They were so out of breath and lips just hurt and were having to call in shifts. Guys watched them circle over us that we talked to later from a big ranch. They guide hunters and were impressed...so, it was quite a sight. Some would drop down to about 40 yds and then drift out. Then another bunch would drop down. We kept thinking a group would circle to within range. But, they never did. Still, it was an awesome memory to put in the books.
Anyway...it was a great day! We've had few of those this year. Sort of helps to make up for it being a tough year in other areas.
A couple of pics from Super Bowl Sunday are attached. Horrible, late-in-the-day cell phone pics, but anyway....The workhorse in there is my son's Lab. He's a 3 yr old and here is slimmed down to fightin' weight at about 95 pounds. No goose intimidates the beast and he can haul the biggest and the baddest for a long fetch.

I'm guessing it was a mature Snow. But, there were a lot of lessers in there too. We were joking about a couple of them being about the size of a real big Mallard.
We did get a couple of monsters, but those are on the bottom.

Snow's; birds everywhere, no limits, birds falling like rain all around you. Well...I wish I could say +1...but the last part didn't exactly come to fruition. I'd like to grab some better sounds and put out white decoys then try it again.

Good dog. That lab is is showing more rib than most recommend. Nevertheless, he's still so big that the largest Avery vest made is getting to be too small. As he matures and the chest is likely to get larger yet.

Yeah Steve, I'll give ya a thumbs up on that hound of yours too. In the pic he's only a 1/3 smaller then the guy kneeling next to him. Good looking, alert lab. Bet he doesn't take much sas from a gimpy gander, either. Oh and nice geese by the way, good looking field setup as well.

Tell him the right answer is shifting to a .284-.308, and for the right fee you'll convert his 7-08 so it works a lot better on deer in the brush. Muledeer

Thanks, but I can't take any credit. The kid with his dog is my oldest. He weighs in at about 225 or so. So, yeah, its a big dog.
But, this is all his gig. He started with a friend and first year never killed a goose. He kept at it and kept learning from friends, I buy him decoys for Christmas and so forth. Now, after taking him on countless expeditions, he's been dragging me out there to hunt geese. Cool huh?
