260 WHO MAKES AN AFTERMARKET BOLT SGROUD FOR '93-'95's? powdr Not sure if anyone does as he was referring to the M96 Swede. I have A Swede one with a Wisner bolt shroud. Not sure if Jum stills sells 'em. If anyone makes one for the '93 that it would likely be Ed LaPour but I doubt it.

Czech, I built a 'scout' rifle back in the 80s from a Columbian Mauser. Although it is a 98 action, I've only used the original 7X57 military equivalent load in it. This is a Hornady 175 gr RN soft point at about 2300 fps. There's just no need to heat this load up even though I could with the 98's strength.
I filed down the rear sight base and soldered a solid plate into the opening where the rear sight's spring went. Then I drilled and tapped it and screwed on a weaver base. I found a cheap Tasco 2X pistol scope with a 9 minute dot reticle and installed it with weaver rings. All I had to do was put that dot on a deer's chest and pull the trigger.
I used it for years doing walk drives with my hunting buddies, but it has been in the gun safe unused for a long time now. Can't say why that is the case, because it was 6 for 6 on running/walking deer, all one shot kills. I guess I just have too many other rifles that are newer and beg to be used these days. That 175 RN will bust a deer big time.

A general comment on this thread: It's always interesting to read about the concern of many shooters about putting their face behind a pre-'98 Mauser action, yet the same folks wuld shoot a pre-'64 Model 70 with absolute confidence--when the pre-'64 has just about zero provision for a blown case.

Pre 98 means 1898 right? I wouldn't put my face behind it either.

Slightly off topic, apologize. I recall a thread that discussed this and the various designs. Can't find it, anyone have a link? How are the Kimber Montana and Savage designs in regards to venting gasses in the event of a blown case?

93's have frt locking lugs the same size as a 98,what they lack is the 98's safety lug. Yes they cock on closing. I believe it was Dayton -Traister that offered a cock on opening conversion for them.I traded $11 and a tired M572 Remington pump for a Century Arms sporterized M93 Oviedo 7x57 in 1969. 40 rd cartons of FMJ military ammo for $6 ea. $6.50 a box for 175 grRN softpoint Remington ammo. After running 200 rds thru it I took it to the Shell Shop in Sioux City, Iowa. Had the owner -gunsmith drill and tap it,low swing safety, alter the bolt handle, cut and crown the barrel and reblue it all. He put Weaver bases on it and was done in a month, cost me $68.50 ,big money back then.Could have filled the gas tank 6 times for that.Sent off to E.C. Bishop for the semi inletted blank to use on it.My interest in shooting it propelled me to acquire a RCBS Jr and dies for it and learn how to load . 120 gr and 139 gr Hornady's and bought a box of the old 140 NPT's to be used on my 1st deer with IMR 4350.Learned it all by the use of my Pacific Rifle/Pistol Cartridge Reloading Manual ,4th edn September 1970.Just about wore the old book out, reading it until I bought my first Hornady and Nosler Manuals. Took 2 years to get my first deer license . On opening day 1972 a nice 3x3 made the mistake of getting up 35 yds away and pausing long enuf for me to break both frt shoulders with a 140 NPT. Have shot mine for 40 odd years with the 2 stage trigger and once you are used to it they work just fine.I'll find me a nice fat meat buck, atleast a 4x4 this fall. That gun and I will get the job done on our 40th aniversery of the 1 st one. I have many nicer and more expensive rifles now but none that do it any better when its time to put meat on the ground. 378canuck,
Pre-'98 in this instance is only the model number, though a lot were made before 1898. Some continued to be made beyond 1898. At any rate, they are generally of good steel (especially the German and Swedish-made actions) and unless abused there's nothing wrong with them.
I've had several, with no problems. One 1895 I converted to a real sporter, in much the same way Magnum Man describes, though I rebarreled mine from the original 7x57 because the bore was a little rough. Found a take-off 6.5x55 barrel for $30, and had a local gunsmith fit it and turn down the bolt handle. I drilled and tapped it for scope mounts, and added a low safety and a Timney trigger. Then I got a cheap semi-inletted stock from Fajen and fitted, finished and checkered that. It shot well under an inch with about anything. After a couple of years I sold it for $200, about what I had into it, to my friend John Haviland (Elk on the Campfire) who loans it to local kids whose parents can't afford a starter rifle. It's now accounted for a pile of deer and elk, and is still going strong, 20 years later.
Have also owned a number of 1883, 1894 and 1896 Mausers, with nary a speck of trouble from any of 'em. The 1896 Swedish rifles are particularly fine.

I was assuming he wanted a 3 position safety on the shroud. A 96 can be made into a very fine rifle. My 7x57. I, personally, would not do this with a 93 or 95.

Tony, that's a beauty and I'd bet it shoots the same as it looks. I have a few sporters built on Military actions but it's just something I don't do anymore, my 338-06 is on a FN and I think that is the way to go for me. Magnum Man
