I like thumpers: deep woods, heavy thicket, soggy bottom, gully and gulch guns. I've wanted to find a beater 788 30-30 and since the 30-30 has the same head size as a 375 Winchester. Have a 30-30 788 re-barreled to 375 Winchester. The clip should only require a simple modification.

I have a left-handed 788 in 6mm Rem. It's not my usual go-to rifle for deer, but I have shot three with it, as well as a variety of other critters. It is very accurate.
I think it will see some action this summer with the groundhog population on the rise in this area, after a long time of hardly any of them around here.

788, The most underated rifle ever. I got to get one!!!

Many think they're highly over rated (and now over priced), but I have several of 'em, anyway. But the last one I bought some years ago (243), only cost me $300 and was a bargain. ;O)

The protruding box magazines never bothered me.

We have a .243 my dad bought back in the middle 70's. My brother and I both learned to hunt with it but never killed anything but some squirrels and a coyote with it. Now it just sits in my brother's safe in AZ. Doubt it has been shot in 10 years.

I've had my 6mm since 1972 and it still gets used every year. Right now it's off getting a new, well-earned stock for it's 40th birthday. Too bad the lefty's didn't come in 22-250 or 44 mag - those would be fun.
