Maybe this is a good place to ask.

Fired brass is a bit tough to chamber in my new 7 WSM. It's not the sliding into battery, it's the crush fit at the end.

If I'm understanding the dynamic at play, this points to a chamber a CH short, a sizing die a CH long, or a combo of those things.

Is having a thou or two removed from the bottom of my die a viable solution?

Since you mention a die, do you mean sized brass is hard to chamber?

Jeff, fired brass that has not been sized again will be a little harder to chamber as it stretches a tad. 7WSM brass is not usually bad about this IME.

I assume you are talking about fired and resized brass being hard to chamber????

Yes. New brass slides right in.

The die is an RCBS FL.

Take it off the top of the shell holder if the die is screwed all the way down.

Trying to understand.

New brass that has not been sized slides right in.

Fired brass that has been resized has a crush fit.

Is this right?

So, you resized the 1x fired brass with an RCBS FL die and you are getting a crush fit that you don't like. Correct?

Have you tried screwing the die down another 1/4 turn?

Have you measured where the shoulder is on the fired brass vs. the new brass?

Have you you tried using a magic marker on the fired brass to see where you are getting contact?

New, loaded brass slides in easily and the bolt closes easily.

Fired, FL sized brass slides in easy enough but it's harder than I'd prefer to close the bolt. Initial extraction is harder than ideal too.

I am loading to full pressure FWIW.

Sako, the shellholder contacts ("cams over" as they say) the bottom of the die. It can't go any lower.

Initially I planned on neck sizing, but after smoking the neck/shoulder and incrementally moving the die down, by the time I was even beginning to touch the shoulder I was already camming over.

Thus, my thinking that my chamber is a CH short, my die a CH long, or both.

The FL die can be turned into the press past the point where it makes contact with the shell holder in the unloaded state. Have you tried this?
