6mm Remington Benchrest....rifle not identified. Wow! ...and not even fired with the vaunted 6PPC!

100 yards, at the Shamrock XI shoot in Dublin Ga. but Nancy Tompkins won the Arizona smallbore shoot, with a score of 3,199 out of a possible 3,200, plus a bunch of Xs (tie breaker shots).

Yowee, that is beyond amazing, 25 shots average .141", I'm really glad Jim did it & did it with the BR instead of the Russian cartridge. Back in the 60's-70's Jim wrote for Handloader/Rifle magazine & his cast bullet articles to a young GI in Sherman, Texas were as good as it gets, he did some pretty far out experiments. One time he opened up a 308 case & after some alterations to a 223 case he inserted it into the 308 to reduce powder capacity & was shooting some dandy 30 caliber cast bullet groups, this was about the time McMillian shot a new world record using a 222 & the new, experimental CCI Bench Rest primer. It was with a Light Varmint class gun. Great stuff!

Jim is a shooter, for sure. Years ago one of the magazines invited several gun writers to come for a shooting contest. Maybe someone here will remember better than I do, but here goes.
The guy who planned the contest put up a cardboard cutout of a deer at 500 yards. The shooters were required to fire three shots. Jim was the only one to hit the target. His group was 1 5/8" with a Savage .25-06.

That is certainly some incredible shooting. Jim has been my favorite gun writer for many years. His Book of the Rifle is a classic work that every shooter should read.

Jim did use a 6PPC. I know an article said 6mm Remington Benchrest bullet, but he definitely used the PPC. It was at 100yds and the actual size was .1441 and not .141.

Yes he has used one as a writer, but he uses a full custom as we all do in benchrest.

I didn't mean to imply he used a Savage to accomplish his new record.
I always find it curious that Savages are maligned often, but that they are highly accurate production rifles.
What are the action designs for the bench rest rifles? Is there one "hot" action most use? I'm not all that familiar with this part of the shooting sports.
