A buddy of mine, Dan Dowling of Grand Junction, shot a .059 @200 yards at a sanctioned shoot here in Grand Junction over the weekend. Target and documentation have been sent to the governing body officials for evaluation. He's a better-than-average gunsmith and been in the BR game a long time.
I have not seen Dan in a few years since I have not had the time to play the benchrest game lately, I used to love his stories and trading bottles of hot sauce with him. AWESOME that he shot such a group !!!!!!!!
Dan was always tinkering with cartridges other than the usual 6ppc, do you know what he was using for the record ?????

Truly an amazing accomplishment. Dan has been at the top of his game as both a 'smith and competitor for decades. Congrats!

Good shootin' -Al

And not many are as prestigious enough as Dan is to have a rifle match named in their honor....

I'm guessing it would have to be a windless day. Windless or not that's spectacular shooting, congrats to Dan.

That's great shooting.
I for one am glad Dan is still around and can shoot like that.
Years ago I had him build several hunting rifles.
Had a left handed M700 270 WCF built for my dad.
Turns out Dan was also left handed like my dad .
He really got a kick out of that gun.
Said he liked it so well and it fit him so good, he wanted to keep it..
.... When the first batch of 220 Russian brass ran out.
Don Geraci didn't have any and didn't know if more was coming.
Dan developed a shortened 6mm BR called the Talldog.
One of the few cartridges that was ever capable of hanging with the PPC.

It's seldom windless around Grand Junction. Dan said the breeze was steady and described the mirage as 'mice tracks' but manageable. Obviously!
Dan is a great guy!

I don’t think I can hold that tight at 100 yards, much less at 200 and touch off a round. That’s amazing shooting.

Ha!

Me, too.

Amazing. Likely not bested any time soon, maybe ever.

Even with a great shooter and state of the art equipment, don’t ya know the stars and planets had to be lined up just right.

Amazing. Congrats to the shooter.

He used to set up at the Des Moines IA gun show.

Dan has built a couple of rifles for me several years ago. I always like him, congrats on a super group.
MWN: That is simply stunning!
I would have to opine that to be "absolute accuracy"!
Thanks for sharing this important info/feat.

Congrats on an awesome accomplishment

How many shots is that .....3 ?
Posted By: DocEd Re: 200-yard Benchrest record - 12/08/23
To qualify as a record it must be 5 shots, Unless it is fired from a "Heavy Bench" or Rail-Gun, and then it must be 10 shots.

I'm pretty sure Williamsport in PA shoots 10 shots for record no matter Lgt or heavy gun.

I'm not talking about the 200 yard record, not all LT gun matches are 5 shot. Williamsport shoots nothing but 10 shot for record at 1,000.
Do you know were the 200 yard record was shot?
Grand Junction Colorado is a couple miles from Williamsport PA.

Yep, congrats to a fine fellow.. Dan did my first BR rifle and it was a hammer! Wow, that was 30 years ago. Was always a pleasure to visit with..

I believe he was the smith that built my Uncle's 460 Weatherby Magnum Sillywet Pistol.
