Gewehrfreund,
Thanks. I handled one recently and was suprised how easily it balanced in the carry and on point.
In general it looks somewhat like a 1B but the forearm is, if anything, wider than a 1B and the receiver is also flared somewhat by comparison. On close inpection however, it is clarly a distinct design of its own.
The specimen I saw was low serial-numbered, had nice woood, a monkey tail lever for the fallng block, and it was in very good to near pristine shape.
Oddly it had a Weaver k4 mounted upside down and backwards in a Control mount. I'd bet someone switched scopes, probably from a more valuable, old timer variable, and did it in a big hurry.
It was in 22-250 -- not my cup of tea. Priced around $750.
I found almost nothing -- expect for the patent requests -- on it in an internet search or queries to the other guys in the know.

well, i have one, in 7x57 when i first got it, had problems with the extractor jumping the rim of the casing. Polishing the chamber seemed to correct that. Last week it jammed up on the action, and is at a gunsmith now. Basically it is a pretty little carbine, and shoots pretty good. I should of bought the 6mm bench rest that was with the carbine. They were made in california as i understand it by a old german gunsmith, and not too many made. The wood is supposedly california hardwood of some kind on mine.

in chapter 14 of SINGLE SHOT ACTIONS THEIR DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTION by De Haas, he evaluates the riedl action. he wasn't overly impressed with the design or as he puts it "it's unsound in a number of respects."
