Think of a 22 Hornet that's what you bought only the ammo is very expensive, tricky to reload. Interesting cartridge in the LEO supressed PS90 but otherwise offers nothing new.

Had a civilian PS 90, interesting little blowback semi auto that broke the bank to shoot. Empty cases don't exist and reloading takes hard to find powders.

There is a whole website devoted to this caliber. That's where I got my reloading info.

In a bolt or single shot, a 22 K Hornet will eat its lunch and the classic 222 Remington is a far better all around "quiet .224 cartridge".

Good shooting !

If one wishes to argue that in a rifle, the 5.7X28 offers almost nothing of interest over say the .22 Hornet or the .221 Fireball, fine. In a handgun, it's a much different animal.
Powders for reloading the 5.7 are easy to find since they are AA#5 and Ramshot's True Blue. It is, BTW, a critical round to reload. I know of no sources for brass. E

Good point for a people killer, but how many of us are killing people ?

I'll stick with my 329 for the woods stoked w/300 gr hardcasts and a max load of H110 and Kimber 45 ACP for "else where" stoked with CorBon 230 gr +Ps. Never use handloads for self defense, scumbag attorneys will love you !

Shucks Guys dont hold back lets hear what you really think:)Really I understand being the owner of a hornet , khornet, 221 fireball, several 222s and many 223s. I was really looking at it as a powder hoarder, & reloadable 22. Going to give it a try. Now you all didnt talk like actual owners of this caliber, SOOOOO let me ask why this little booger would be any worse than a hornet to load for?And as far as cost maybe a little more than hornet bullets but not much, shoots the same bullet uses same primer, a little less powder, I just want to see what yall see.
Help me out here whats the secret I cant see.At worst I have a 223 reamer & an aI reamer we can fix it if its broke.

I picked up about 200 empty cases at the range on Friday... gave them to one of the range masters as he has ordered a semi auto rifle and a pistol for it...

seeing how small it was, I wasn't impressed.. although a reloadable case like that in 17 caliber might be of interest...

I own a handgun chambered for this round and I have reloaded for it.
I've reloaded for the .22 Hornet, the .222, and .223 as well.
I suggest you go to Ramshot's or Accurate Arm's website and look at their reloading data for this round. Please note the notes below the data concerning the critical nature of the round and their very clear warnings concerning overall lenth and working up loads only .1 of a grain at a time.
In a handgun, the brass has it's shoulder moved quite a bit by an odviously oversized chamber. Another cause for concern to me.
The FN pistol for this round is a really neat, light, 19 oz. empty, gun. Fully adjustible sights, very accurate, and it holds 20+1 rounds, unless you live in Kalifornia.
I dunno about the less powder idea. Reloads run 5.5-6.1 grs. with Ramshot True Blue vs. 12-13 grs. for the Hornet. Would take quite a while to save much at those rates. E

i have an 18" tapered 5.7x28 Contender Carbine barrel.

i topped mine with a 2x7 nikon, and mostly it sees moderate loads, a touch over the 22mag. bought it because i just wanted something different to play with that i can load mild for squirrel hunting. already shoot a .22hornet, and a 17ackley hornet, so it didnt fill any niche requirements for me other than just a little variety.

AA#7 was more agreeable than AA#5 with the few bullets i've tried, which were mostly in the 34-46 grain range.

H110, Lil Gun, etc, shot great, but with muzzle blast about like the hornet. the AA7 loads were more along the lines of 22mag noise levels.

no special tricks in loading brass, once fired i just neck size . i see a fair bit of brass around here at the gunshows, last bag i bought was around 500pcs for $35.

Thanks fyrepowrx thats what i was lookin for i bought the same bbl want to try mild loads maybe even cast bullets everythings ready jus gotta wait for the bbl

You've used H110, Little Gun and AA#7 with that round ? Where did you find the data for those powders ? E
Posted By: FyrepowrX Re: 5.7 x28 ?????? - 03/27/12
plenty of data over on the 5.7 forums, although a lot is geared to the autopistol, and less than ideal for rifle use. not that it wont work, just that many of the loads geared towards the pistol have been loaded to minimize muzzle flash, and insure function, a moot point in the TC of course.

have had a few friends that have shot the 5.7 in Contenders & Encores, i had a 14" contender barrel myself for a while, 1-10 twist MGM on a pac-nor blank. finaly settled on an 18" tapered carbine that was a small production run. paperkiller, yours the same length/profile ? i got mine from Ed as well.

some load data, though not all tested by me, so the standard "use at your own risk" disclaimer applies. the ones i have used have been fine, but as i have no knowledge whatsoever about the autopistol, or its limitations, i'd save these for TC use. so far, my favorite load for all around use has been 7.0gr AA#7 under the speer 46gr FN bee bullet.

That's very interesting......
I went to Hodgdon's, Accurate Arm's and Ramshot's sites looking for pressure tested data. I found none at Hodgdon's, data for both AA#5 and AA$7, at AA's site and data for True Blue at Ramshot's site.
Good luck with the rest of that data. In very strong rifle actions, one can probably work up loads to some degree. But in handguns, like the FN pistol, you are really asking for trouble using non pressure tested data. E

absolutely agreed.

when i get home, will measure 5.7 case capacity as compared to 22CCM, kinda curious now that i think of it, betting the 5.7 will fall in between the .22CCM and the .22squirrel.

What a great little cartridge. I'd like to have one. But not on a platform where you have to worry about that stupid lacquer coating on the brass.

i find the cartrage very interesting as a varminter. i may chamber a contender carbine for it some day. think of the amount of ammo you can carry. 500 rds and a light rifle can come in handy in montana if you are stuck walking in because of rain and you get into a really good dog town. well the hornets do fit the bill perfictly but i dont need much of an excuse to build another gun.
