Anyone have any thoughts on this? I am thinking about applying for the Dubois area next year. My buddy who lives up that way says that it is damn near impossible for a non-resident without alot of preference points. He says it is really hard for a resident to draw up that way also. Any thoughts?

I am not too sure how the WY preference system works, but a shrias tag is hard to get. Period. Non-residents have even less chances. I got my tag this year (after trying for 16 years) and I got mine relatively quickly. Some have been applying for 40 years plus. Some districts have better odds than others though. There were actually some leftover tags in Idaho a few years ago.

One thing for sure, you won't get drawn if you don't apply.
How true. I just looked at the website and the drawing odds. If I am reading it right (and I may not be) I have ZERO chance of drawing without at least 10 preference points which would take 10 years to accumulate. Talk about a dream!

WTF!

Moose, sheep and goat hunts are hard to draw!

Look at the amount of money it's gonna take to apply for 15 years and decide if youre up for it.

In ten to 15 years you'll be glad you did, and it will be the cheapest way for a Kansas resident to go moose hunting.

IIRC WY has a preference point only option for moose which costs $75.

When you do get a tag, do yourself a favor and do NOT attempt to get the damn thing out by yourself. Learn from my mistakes.
Posted By: Cinch Re: Wyoming Moose draw odds? - 11/29/10
I've been putting in 20 years and never drawn, yet my old man has been putting in 28 years and drawn 5. Lucky bastid draws a tag every time he puts in...
Posted By: ou76 Re: Wyoming Moose draw odds? - 11/29/10
It took me 12 years to draw and then I had to change areas...which was a mistake as I saw very few Moose...wolf populations in the area have hurt the Moose populations near Moran...Jackson Hole...
Posted By: Cinch Re: Wyoming Moose draw odds? - 11/29/10
They sure have. We've been hunting moose up there in 17 for a long time and it's worse every time we go. Pretty bad when the haven't even issued antlerless tags up there in years and you don't see any cows at all.
Posted By: ou76 Re: Wyoming Moose draw odds? - 11/29/10
This past year I was in 17 too...September 9-18 I saw 5 Moose.. 1 cow and calf, 2 small bulls and a single cow...
I went back October 22-30th and saw a single cow, 1 broken horn bull, 1 small bull and the old bull I harvested on the last day of the season....I was told there were only 5 permits issued for 17 this past year...quite a decrease from just five years ago...

My brother's moose from this past fall. Montana odds arent very good either. He'd been applying for 20 years and had 9 bonus points.
Posted By: ou76 Re: Wyoming Moose draw odds? - 11/29/10
What area did he draw?? I have 5/6 preference points in Montana...

Great looking bulls, both of 'em!! Odds are long everywhere, so I'd put in for nearly all states if you can afford it. If you don't want to wait, you can always buy a CWMU permit in UT. Ain't cheap, but is another option.
Some areas in Wyoming do have non resident tags in the general draw. It isn't many but it isn't a zero percent chance either. I have 9 points and am waiting for the right year. I worry about my son getting a tag some time. He has to wait till he is 12 to begin to accumulate points and by that time the max points will be astronomically high.

i am hearing from buddy's that are outfitters in wyoming, that wyoming is going to reduce the amout of moose permits
because the population has droped so much from wolfs and bears, will have to wait and see went the 2011 rules come out and see if they know what they are talking about.
Ho ho ho
Posted By: Ralphie Re: Wyoming Moose draw odds? - 11/29/10
The moose tag numbers have already been reduced. Some units have been closed. All because of all the drastic HABITAT issues we've had since 1997...(please note the sarcasm, but the habitat explanation is the guts & feathers line)

With most limited draw hunts in Wyoming everyone who puts in has some chance. I believe 25% of tags are put in the random draw pot. That's why you hear of folks like Cinch's dad who draw these tags without max points. I once guided a sheep hunter who had put in 3 times.
Posted By: l2ldc Re: Wyoming Moose draw odds? - 11/29/10
you still have a chance to draw with no preference points in wyoming. 25% of the available tags go the random draw and 75% go to preference points. for area 17, there are so few tags available that they only give 1 nonresident tag and it goes to the preference points draw, areas 1,5, 20,23, etc had atleast 1 tag available for the random draw this past year. If you go back 5 years almost all areas for nonresident moose had atleast 1 tag available for the random draw, that just shows how much the tags have been cut because the population seems to be down.

I think my dads last tag for 17 was 3 years ago and the had issued 25 antlered moose tags. We ran in to a G&F biologist that said there weren't even 25 moose in the area and was puzzled why they would issue so many tags. I'd love to draw an area 1 or 34 tag...
I think I am going to keep holding out till I have the points for 34 or 1. Not sure how long it will take but with 9 points and being in my 30's I have to have a chance eventually.

A guy I work with drew 34 this year. It only took him 30 some years... And he ended up shooting a dink. Pre-season scouting is your friend!
I'd take a dink any day over tag soup!

Alaska has moose..... For $500 and transportation, you are good to go over the counter. No guide or outfitter required. And ours aren't dinks like those Shiras..... smile

Although this one is, sorta - a 2 or 3 year old taken in late September. IIRC, this is my 20th.

That is in the Scapegoat Wilderness Area, which is the southern end of the Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex. . .

Perhaps you guys from Wyoming can tell me why the moose started falling on their butts before there were wolves, and why they aren't producing as many calves where there aren't wolves. Twins are normal for moose, and we have seen very few twin calves in Wyoming since the 70s. Even in the Snowy Range, with a "new" moose population, the number of twins has declined as the number of moose has increased. And no wolves. The dummies who actually spend some time studying moose noticed the three species of willows that moose liked to eat best were gone from summer and winter ranges in northwestern Wyoming by the late 1970s. Since then, calf survival has gone to hell. And cow moose are getting pregnant but not raising helathy calves. Must be fear of wolves and bears, I guess. I suggest those of you experts that are thinking of having kids just feed your pregnant wives Twinkies and see how well the kid does.
If the human predators had killed some moose back when everyone was bitching about too many licenses there might be more licenses available now because the moose wouldn't have trashed the habitat. You could say the same for deer, too.
I noticed you boys from Gillette aren't bitching about the disappearing deer due to oil and gas development.
I understand the odds of getting a nonresident Wyoming moose tag are about 1 in 80. You could easily apply every year for a century and not get one. I applied in Wyoming, Maine and New Hampshire for about 10 years with no success.

So I decided to go shoot a moose. I had a great experience in Ontario this September at a lodge on a remote lake. Guaranteed bull tag, license, guide, lodging, food, flights, boats, and good fishing on a 7-day hunt for less than 6K.

My moose was certainly not a monster, but I was able to bring all the meat, including heart and liver, home in my truck and the quarters weighed 502 lbs. hanging at the processor. It's the first moose meat I ever ate, and its really, really good. You might want to consider a place where a drawing is not necessary.

Wildhobbybobby: (I like that name by the way!)

For me it boils down to simple economics. I have a buddy in Wyoming I can stay with for free. I just have to get the tag and the gas to get there. I would LOVE to try another state or even Canada, just can't afford to right now. Someday maybe!

You are correct. Moose meat is REALLY GOOD! Good looking bull!

Thanks! My English teacher in high school, Ms. Jacqueline Leroy (who was HOT...too bad she is in her 80's now) started calling me that in class because I was an incurable gun nut even in 1965.

I sure understand the ecomomics of it all. I just decided I can't take it with me, so I might as well have some fun before I croak. Good luck on getting a tag, and I hope you get a nice bull sooner or later.
Trouthunter-, I didn't know you had 9 pts for Wyo moose. I have 9 also and also 9 for sheep. Trying to figure how and when to do this as the sheep will not be e a s y and I've been getting AARP stuff for some years now grin

If one really wants a moose, spring for Alaska.
Talked to the wife about JUST THAT! Needless to say, it generated quite the spirited discussion! Doesn't look like I am going any time soon. (as a married man anyway!)

I started while I was living in Minneapolis and glad I did. I am waiting for Dad to retire so I can have some help packing it out. It also might get him on the Meek weight loss plan. wink I think the sheep hunt will take till I am recieving AARP information. smile
