Any body on here own a fireworks stand / tent?

It’s go time around here.

Folks putting up the giant revival tents.

Buy 6 get 5 free black cats.

I remember when i was a kid in the early 80’s, my folks ordered fireworks through the mail. I remember looking through a catalog.

Or going to Jimmy’s Fireworks. Older couple had a small stand (maybe 5’x10’) in their front yard.

Not much selection.

Just get what you could for your $5.

Smoke bombs. Bottle rockets. Firecrackers….

What’s market up on that stuff? Like 95%??😂😂🤣😂

P.s.

I know some boomer is gonna say “fireworks?? Pffttt. What a waste of money”

I make some of my own.

As a matter of fact, I need to make another batch of flash powder.

What states allow bottle rockets?

When we lived in Texas, we drove back to ND for the 4th. We stopped by some stand to buy fireworks, alas no bottle rockets in ND.

A guy I work with owns a fireworks stand rental place. You lease a stand and buy your fireworks from him. He delivers the stand and sells you the firecrackers. I’m not sure of all the specifics but I know it’s a pretty lucrative business for him.

My dad and his brother ran a fireworks stand for their uncle when they were kids. Plywood stand built on a pickup bed trailer made out of a 1962 Ford short narrow bed. They were just talking about it last Saturday and how far the $60 each they made that summer went in 1969.

Did you know that don knotts was on episode 16 of Matlock in 1986? grin

For most of my life fireworks were illegal in GA. But there was always a fireworks stand 10' inside the Alabama state line. I have a lot of family in Tennessee and dad would always stock up when we were visiting relatives there.

They are legal here now, but I haven't seen any " real" fireworks since the 1970's. They are all much weaker now than they used to be.
Posted By: Teal Re: Fireworks stands? - 06/21/22
Used to spend a ton on it, me and a friend would go in 1/2s

Now he owns his own pyrotechnics company.

Firework wise - I was a 3 pony show mostly. Black cats, bottle rockets and roman candles. Then they started selling mortar balls - that took over for the roman candles.

All illegal to use without a permit where I am. Never been asked to produce said permit. My brother lives across the street from the cop shop - we'll light off 1500 worth of them and they don't say boo.
Posted By: auk1124 Re: Fireworks stands? - 06/21/22
Fireworks laws are ignored around here too. I have no idea what the current laws are but it used to be we had to go out of state to get the good stuff. Nowadays you could probably touch off a 155 howitzer and the cops wouldn't care.
Posted By: gunchamp Re: Fireworks stands? - 06/21/22
Fireworks, like everything else, have risen significantly in price. That said, they legalized them here a few years back. Taxed them at 18% lol. We do a big display every year. Have since I was a kid
Posted By: Kenneth66 Re: Fireworks stands? - 06/21/22
Yep , long as you don’t get stupid about it they usually won’t .
But there is always a Barney in there somewheres .
We were letting off a bunch one night and the cops came , stood over to the side and watched till we finished . Then walked into our midst and told us it was a great display and asked if we were done . Yep we’re done and he looked at the other officer and said looks like we got here to late , nothing left to confiscate , smiled and pointed at a house and said some people hate to see someone have fun .
Went on their way .
But sometimes they will pop you for it , was a fellow that sold all kinds of stuff that was an illegal misdemeanor in Va but for some reason they honed on to him and busted his ass almost every year .
Same town there was a retired trooper who owned a mom and pops convienence store was butt deep in the same thing and never got hassled .
Guess that connects the dots huh ?

We used to go to Lineville Mo and get fireworks. They were illegal in Lineville, Iowa so across the state line were 6 fireworks stands lined up and busy. oh for the days of cherry bombs and m-80s.
Posted By: OlderGuy54 Re: Fireworks stands? - 06/21/22
You can't swing a dead cat and not hit either a fireworks or watermelon stand.

I once found myself in a hospital emergency waiting room late in the evening on the 4th of July.

I was there for a couple of hours, I'd brought a friend in that was suffering from severe back pain.

Now that was amazing, I'd have never believed the grotesque injuries that came through the door if I hadn't seen them myself.
There was like a couple dozen and I was in a smaller town.

Some people shouldn't play with those things.

You used to be able to buy bottle rockets and Roman candles here...but only on the Rez.

Not sure about today.

My kid helps a guy run a fireworks stand. I don’t know the markup percentage, but they make a chitload of money in a couple of weeks. There’s one on just above it every corner in our small town.

I was 10-15 years ahead of you going down to Lineville. Good times. Lived out in the country in South Central Iowa and never got hassled.

Buddy of mine ran a temporary/July 4th stand for his in-laws here in TN. He said they would clear 10000 plus in a week easy. All cash. They give away hand fulls off free stuff to every customer to keep them smiling.

They need to be banned in western US

Too many wildfires get started from irresponsible use of fireworks

We get too many fires started from other ways

Lightning...careless campfires (when not banned) vehicle heat over dry grass....tow chains etc

When I was a kid I would make similar but with small glass jars that had screw on metal lids. I’d get the rocket fuse at the hobby shop.
A little wax around the fuse hole and you could roll fish up from the bottom of the pond!

Only recently became legal here in Iowa. Killjoys now making all sorts of local ordinances to spoil the fun.

Not sure about now, but back in the 90's, to get a retailers fireworks license in La., you had to buy $300 worth of fireworks + a $25 IIRC license fee from a wholesaler. You would not believe what $300 at wholesale prices would buy back then. These days, I dont know what the rules are.

I took a $100 to a friend that had a stand and said 'fix me up'. He just kept piling fireworks on the table and I dont just mean the cheap stuff. Remember the big paper bags you got at the grocery store. I had 4 of them stuffed full. Told him that was too much and he was losing money. He laughed and said he only made about 75%-100% on me, dont tell anyone....

He's the fellow that told me how to get a license. The next year, 3 of us went together and got the license and more fireworks than we knew what to do with.

When I was young it was all illegal in Minnesota, but a few places in Wisconsin had stands with small stuff. You had to go to South Dakota to get the good stuff. There were a lot of stands right across the border. A few years ago Minnesota finally allowed some of the really wimpy things like sparklers and smoke bombs. I don't know of any place that you can still get cherry bombs. They were the best!

Cherry bombs and M80's.

My buddy's dad had a fireworks stand, it was on the north edge of Alice Tx where they owned a hotel on Hwy 281, we would have bottle rocket fights. We would shoot them out of 4ft pvc tubes at each other, I got Allan good one time on the belly, it was perfect timing it exploded right on contact and gave him a nasty burn.
On another occasion doing the same I shot at paul but missed and hit a DPS Troopers cars passenger window as he was driving down 281, Luckily Allans Dad was a retired LEO and managed to keep us from getting arrested.
Then there was time we were cruising down 6th st in Austin throwing rockets and other stuff out the car window.

We used BB guns to aim bottle rockets. Slide them down the muzzle and bam - you got sights and a shoulder stock to launch them.

Go up to the cottage as kids - send someone out in a canoe on the lake and try and "sink" them.

Lots of fireworks down here, forget sleeping fourth and New Years!
Posted By: wytex Re: Fireworks stands? - 06/21/22
Year round sales here and we can buy almost anything to shoot.
Most years local authorities put a ban on shooting them unless on private land.
Not hard to find private spots, and some local gov't sponsored sites to shoot them off.
They are not allowed on NF or BLM lands.

Kicking Wing only sells snakes and sparklers.

No whistling bung holes? Husker donts?

When I was a kid, all fireworks were illegal here in Idaho but they could be bought next door in WY. When we had a trip planned in that direction, we'd all save all the money we could to buy as many as possible. Of course when we hit the 1st border town, we'd all want to spend every nickle since we never had the patience to wait until we were farther into the state and they were cheaper. Stuff like sparklers and Roman Candles were considered girly. We wanted explosives. Cherry bombs and M80's. Packs of Black Cats. We wanted a bang for our bucks. Mom preferred sparklers. Booorrrring. She said we could write our names in the air with them. Even mooorrre booorrrring. We wanted our names to explode.
Posted By: hillestadj Re: Fireworks stands? - 06/21/22
Nope. Not even nipsy daisers with OR without the scooter stick. Not even a single whistling kitty chaser.

We made bottle rocket guns out of galvanized pipe. It was probably 3/8ths.

Weld on a piece for a handle.

Friend had a mortar shell shooter he made out of PVC. It shot the shells you fired out of paper tubes.

He used a 9v batters to light them off somehow.

If ya wanna big bang.
Step it up to schedule 80 and run a piece of 1/2 inch all thread up the middle and bolt the caps on, use thick fender washers or steel plate under the nuts.
Otherwise, it'll just blow a cap off.

Don't transport them, just build them and blow um, ATF might get interested in them.

Been too long to remember if it was M-80s or Cherry Bombs that my older cousins would drop down a fence-post pounder, followed by a D battery. Would penetrate the side of the barn.

Yep. We bought cherry bombs and M-80 silver salutes by the gross. Lots of fun for us, not so much for the neighbors 😳
Posted By: navlav8r Re: Fireworks stands? - 06/21/22
I tied a wheel weight on an M-80 and I took it with us one day when we went out on the Lake. I lit it and threw it overboard. A couple of seconds later it sounded like someone had hit the bottom of the boat with a hammer. 😮 Powerful.

Got a bunch of 1/4 sticks of dynamite in Mexico years ago. Those fuggers make a pretty good bang.
Posted By: 5sdad Re: Fireworks stands? - 06/21/22
We would shoot crows out of trees at night. They would move from one grove to another when we shot. If they landed in a deserted grove, fine. If they alit in a grove on an occupied place, we would toss an M-80 of the car on the road nearby, and they would move.

Guy around prolly has 6 or 8 of the revival tents in several counties..

Hires someone to run each one for the 2 weeks in open.

Live on site 24x7 in a run down camper. 😂🤣

Our small town has a pretty decent fireworks show.
Pro level fireworks.

Put on by the chamber of commerce and local business.

I'm fairly certain that you need an explosives license from the alphabet people to mix up more than 50 milligrams of flash powder. I may be wrong though.

As dry as we have been, and as many big fires as we've had - I sure hope none around our state!
The whole damn state is a tinderbox!

I WILL miss the shows, however.
