Written by our Pentagon-based Army reporter, Haley Britzky, the story focused on Ellizabeth Grimes, who was allegedly assaulted by her husband, Army. Col. Jerel Grimes.
In the wake of the alleged attack, Ellizabeth was left to deal with a number of physical injuries that still require medical attention. Hospital records from that night say her injuries included a "closed head injury, hematoma, concussion, cervical strain, extremity contusion or fracture." She also was put on medication she'd never needed before, to help with anxiety, depression, and nausea, as well as to help her sleep at night. . .

Servicemen and women have some of the toughest jobs out there. Between rigorous training, deployments to the most dangerous parts of the world—which take them away from their families for long stretches of time—to frequent moves every few years to new bases, the stressors of military life are many.
But, these are still not excuses to abuse one’s spouse. Plenty of service members under some of the most stressful circumstances are not abusers. However, servicemen and women do face additional challenges when it comes to escaping from or reporting abuse. Being in the military is one of the 50 barriers to leaving survivor and advocate Sarah Buel identified. Abuse among military couples is also vastly underreported, as survivors often fear repercussions from their abuser should he or she be demoted as a result of reporting abuse. When a domestic violence report is made, it may be subject to military-led investigation, and consequences may be dictated by the military code of conduct as well as federal law.
Here’s some important stats that remind us all domestic violence is [unfortunately] alive and well within our armed forces community.
2-3: Male combat veterans who suffer from PTSD are two to three times more likely to abuse their female partners than veterans not suffering from PTSD.

Enter a safe email 1/3: About 33 percent of combat veterans with PTSD report having been aggressive with their intimate partner at least once in the previous year.
9 in 10: About 91 percent of combat veterans with PTSD reported being psychologically aggressive with their intimate partner in the previous year.
Up to 7 in 10: Between 30 and 70 percent of female veterans have experienced intimate partner violence in their lifetime.
>1/3: Among active duty females, 36 percent report having experienced intimate partner violence during their service.
177%: While intimate partner violence declined among civilians between 2003 and 2010, it rose by a whopping 177 percent in the Army during the same period.
1996: The Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act made it illegal for anyone convicted of a domestic violence misdemeanor to possess a firearm. Some exceptions are made, but by and large, the amendment does apply to military, meaning they may be discharged after a conviction.
3 years: Federal law mandates dependent support be offered to the survivor when a service member is discharged from the military due to an abuse offense. Support is remanded for up to 36 months, depending on length of service.
$1,215: The current monthly payment a spouse is entitled to if his or her spouse is discharged from the military because of an abuse offense. The discharged servicemember is also responsible for paying $301 monthly per child.
Many survivors cite financial uncertainty as a barrier to leaving an abuser. If that’s a concern for you, read “When You Can’t Afford to Leave an Abusive Partner.”

Pull an infantry Colonel off his wife, while she was in the ICU, started beating her, because she was in ICU because she came in after he had beaten her.. again.. Army's solution?/ Transfer them to another base...
pulled a Black E8 off of beating his blonde German wife, right in Labor and Delivery.. when the baby was born, it wasn't black enough for him, so he started beating on her, thinking that she'd been having an affair with a white guy....
the higher the rank or the longer time in service, the more tolerance they had for that type of crap....

The Army advised her to apply for a divorce, (she spoke no English), the Captain wasn't court martialed, he was send back to Germany from Ft Lewis...wifey and baby stayed here... from him beating his son who had some congential defect, the poor baby was in the Peds Ward for another 3 months...broke the kid's arm, shoulder, and leg...
i responded,, as I was in another room taking care of a patient, and she came running down the hall screaming Hilfe Hilfe Mir!! I was the only person in the immediate area that spoke German.. she was a bloody mess, but she was pulling me up the hall yelling Meine Kinder, Meine Kinder....
putting him thru the wall was the fastest way I could get him off beating his own son, who was in a baby crib....
A Nurse Colonel interceded of any charges being filled against me, as she witnessed the end of it all...

If the military system is indeed broken, suggest to victims that the issue go to local law enforcement with perhaps a letter to a representative and senator.

I went to school with them, played with them, worked the farm with them, played sports with and against them, stood next to them at town functions and parades...you name it. When you can convince me that your experience with them matches mine, I'll listen to what you have to say. Else, you can stuff it. Whatever prejudices I have are born from a half-century of daily experience.

To who, Birdy? People raised in GB and highly educated on the subject- regular people? Yeah, I expect living in Afreaka, to folks there, they were pretty much just "regular" people.
Well I grew up where I was not around them much, a few in school. I pretty much believed they had been pretty mistreated and I resented it too. I went to college in the late 60s and shuffled one or two at times from college to home town or vice versa, no charge. I knew they were pretty hard up.
It was working summer jobs in construction I started getting and eye opening. Then college in Houston and living around them in apts near campus. And the couple in my class. Ummh. Pretty rough, thieves, little bunches in apts near campus. Dangerous a bit. They werent benign like those in my Grandads sawmill town, several of whom were his friends. Regular people.
Even after college in the medical field. Black chicks working in clinics, rare smart ones or ones who had some get up and go. And call the race card if you told them to hurry up. Hell, I was dealing with patients and I was jumping out my ass. Any whitey tell them how to do something better or different and you're just on their case cause your prejudiced or they are getting got on because they are black, getting put upon. I mean from front office on back. Some were nice. Had to be told to not do or do certain things every freaking day. You're trying to patch an eye and your holding an eye open and ask for the meds or tape from the counter top after cleaning it out with tips and chunking them. And you see that black arm slowly reach out, grab tape or gauze or meds and slowly turn and start slowly travelling through the air toward you. Remind of the cartoon where the cotton picker was slowly picking one bowl atba time and slowly reaching out to drop it. Other says, now dont be too industrious. Sheesh. That one had 5 kids. No husband. Her 14vyear old got knocked up, baby 3 mo early died. All on Medicaid. Never paid a dime toward health care. Tied the hospital up for a year in lawsuits. Yeah. They werent took care of cause dey wuz bleck.
Sheesh. I could go on. Old patients with some eye disease brought in by kids, Medicare, let you know right quick things dont go right they sue your cracker ass.

And we would go on a call to the housing project at night, black granny having chest pain. And while we worked on her we noticed the grandaughters, age 15 and 17, both of them very pregnant and both drunk. One was holding a rum and coke and the other holding a malt liquor can. The girls, probably 8 months pregnant, staggering around, laughing, drunk. I saw drunk black pregnant mommies all the time, certainly once a week I encountered this. And yes, I did run in to pregnant drunk white girls, but this problem was ten times more common in the black community. Fetal alcohol syndrome is terribly destructive to the poor fetus, causes permanent brain damage and many other problems.
I played soccer in college with quite a few black Africans. These were pure blooded blacks, not a drop of white slave owner blood in them. My buddy from Ga. State, Peter Makaya, was from Rhodesia, got a Phd in History, and a Law degree, and is a professor at Middle Georgia College. He never robbed a bank, or beat up some stranger in a subway station.
Mike Iteogu, my buddy from Ga. College, was from Nigeria, got a Phd in Pharmacy, and has a pharmacy business in Macon Georgia. These guys both have doctorates, while I have a 4 year degree, so I guess they are smarter than I am.

Btw, Ej, at the eye school I attended there was a rather genius black guy in class ahead of me from South Africa. He was a good friend for the 3 years we were there until he graduated and went back home. I know another smart graduate from there from Nigeria, I think. I wont vouch for his honesty as he has real problems being forced to pay his debts and has needless testing done on patients to drive up their insurance charges.
Drs can often find small abnormalities they can justify additional testing for.It's legal, not ethical. I worked my ass off 30 years hoarding medications to give my old black patients who were great folks, retired mechanics, cooks, plumbers, construction workers and such until that pos Obama cut the insurance companies so much we could only get a few of the newest drugs to just get patients started on for glaucoma or chronic inflammatory diseases.

One of the things I think is most interesting about this is Birdwatcher's observations of 2 homogeneous societies - 1970's UK and ~1990's Africa. For the moment let's ignore UK's low crime stats at the time and Africa's record of strife. Let's just take Birdie's observations at face value. I don't think he dreamed it up, I think those were his real experiences.
2 things pop out - both societies were homogeneous, but the UK by then had a long history of entitlement starting with the NHS in 1948. We all know the entitlement mentality breeds crime, and if the UK didn't have a lot of crime then, it shouldn't be a surprise that it has a lot of crime now. Africa too is/was very homogeneous. But it lacked the entitlement. No NHS, no welfare, only the irregular handouts of charitable orgs. As for generosity I do recall what Jesus said about the widow’s mite. When that last long dry season and faimine hIt, I had to walk two miles up the mountain to a borehole well every evening, for about three months. The kids I had were, as a group, very serious about their education. Typically the parents can only afford to send one or two of their kids to school. Those kids a that DID get to go were cognizant of the fact that education offered them a way out. They already knew what life was like for subsistence farmers and wanted no part of that.
I was preparing them for their “O” level exam. Education often means freedom, I was employed to help prepare them for that feedom.
I think why Americans are so well-liked one on one by almost ever’body is because we want them to be able to build themselves up and enjoy the same prosperity and freedoms we have.

As I have not been called by His voice to minister to anyone, but to simply be a follower to His Word, I'm gonna say this, and I'm done.
There is not one soul, not one, that He does not love. Actually tha’hood around here is going downhill. Used to be the homeless enclaves around the traffic intersections were all old White guys with beards, hence riding my bicycle home from work after dark I was commonly mistook for homeless, and nobody messes with homeless much.
Now there’s a drug epidemic even more’n usual, most of the homeless around here now are guys of all races in their twenties, ergo predatory. Worse, bicycles are currently in vogue among them, so now I’m a target. Sucks.
Many of my former students who are gainfully employed with kids of their own have moved further out, some to gated communities.

Ride a bicycle across the Heartland some time, and stop for breakfast in small-town diners along the way. While you’re eating read the crime column in the local newspapers. Across this land the opioid epidemic is off the scale.
The most junkies I seen selling/buying drugs in broad daylight downtown was in Delaware OH, skinny White folks in their twenties.
Delaware OH ain’t a dump either, it’s a bedroom community about twenty-five miles north of Columbus. I had a student moved to San Antonio from Southern Ohio, Redneck trailer park-type rural White kid. He told me where he’s from even some Amish are dealing.

Dunno, never lived in a gated community, I was told it was crime. Two houses in my immediate a proximity were just flipped and sold for surprisingly high prices. I didn’t tell em about my hot water or A/C. Anyhow makes me feel good about handing this place over to my son when I roll out.
The real downside of broke is not having much to leave to your kids.

2014- 2,000 miles on a bicycle to NY State. 2015- Ten days in Costa Rica for free herding high school kids around. 2016- Isle of Man TT motorcycle races with my son followed by 1,500 miles on a bicycle England-Scotland-Ireland-France. 2018- not much, flew up to NY State to visit kin. 2019- 500 miles on a bicycle across W Texas, 750 miles around Montana. 2020? Dunno yet, contemplating a ride to NM just because parts of it would be so tough.

Reminds me of a conversation with some co-workers once. Guys would stop on way to fishing at Mickie D's, wives in tow to up the limit of fish of course. Guys order the breakfast sammich, one guys wife orders the lemon poppy seed muffin as it seemed "lighter and less fattening". More friggen calories and fat in that muffin than the egg, ham, cheese, and bun sandwich.
Joos dont eat country ham. Unless it's made from babies of course.
I forgot, probably not Kosher for them to even breath the air in one a them places.

Funny you should ask, my neighbor was conversing in my driveway yesterday and three young Mormons approached. They asked if they could visit with me and I explained they could stay for a week if they felt like it, but I knew plenty of Mormons and not a single one wants me in their church.
They all laughed and gave me a card. The card had a picture of The Jesus on the back.
After they walked away I held the picture of Jesus up to my neighbor (who looks as Jewish as Woody Allen) and asked "You want this for your house?"
He just looked confused and kinda smiled and said "No."
I replied "It's Jesus."
He said (awkwardly) "Yes. I know."
With that, he walked back across the street and I laughed my way back into the house.

They have 2 daughters who are a couple of the most squared away people you would ever meet. Things didn't work out and that's how it is. Not sure what all the problems were, I know geography was a big part of it when the got out. Doesn't seen to be much for bad feelings on either side.

So obviously bicycles have proven to be a way for a broke man to do.... something..... either for adventure or to run away from one’s problems by replacing ‘em with a simpler set of problems of the sort guys are better wired to handle. Like getting from Point A to Point B without getting run over or succumbing to heatstroke.
The coolest takeaways I have so far are taking the wrong ferry to France and ending up 250 miles from where I wanted to be (I was riding the solution 🙂 ), the other was riding a bicycle across West Texas last summer to the NM State Line, and then deciding to turn right and get to Montana by going up the Great Plains instead
On the other end of the spectrum an old motorcycle buddy of means recently flew him and his son to New Zealand and got helicoptered in to some remote mountain peaks where IIRC they hunted Himalayan taur or some such. Waaaaay out of my league.
Sadly that same guy seems to have also recently discovered that recreational drugs are the biggest thrill of all so I guess it’s all relative.
