Picked up a nice Remington 700 in 280. What model rifle do I have here. No lock of course.

Appears to be M700 Stainless Mt. Rifle with the factory Bell and Carlson stock.

What’s the date code on the bbl and the first two digits after the letter(s) on the serial number?

Does the stock have the shadow line cheekpiece on it?

Can’t tell for sure but it looks like a sporter contour.

Looks solid👍

Hanco,
What version do you think it is?

Barrel diameter at the muzzle?
Posted By: JamesJr Re: What do I have Rem 700 - 03/30/24
Hard to tell by the picture, but the barrel appears to be a sporter contour rather than the slimmer barrel of the Mountain Rifle. But, that sure looks like a MR stock.

Factory configuration of a mid 90s bdl stainless synthetic that someone upgraded the stock on and looks like they did the same with the trigger. Great rifle. Great cartridge.

Barrel length?
It’s a 22 barrel. Slim contour

That is indeed the the most recent generation mtn rifle.
Posted By: alpinecrick Re: What do I have Rem 700 - 03/30/24
The stock has an aluminum full length bedding block. It’s pretty strong, 4-5 ozs heavier than aftermarket carbon/kevlar stocks, but still fairly light. I like it.

The stock also has full length contact with the bbl. Cold bbl first shot went wild until I relieved the entire bbl channel on my 308.

Looks to my eye to be a mountain rifle barreled action in a BDL sporter barrel channel stock. Barrel looks pencil thin but stock channel is a bit wide.

Ahh. The 22 inch mountain contour....dead giveaway. Recent production mountain rifle for sure.

+1
It sure appears to be original minus the trigger. The stock is not at all heavy. I’ve not seen another 280, are they tough to obtain?

I have one just like it I bought used a few weeks ago. Rifle and Leupold VX Freedom 3-9x40 for $900. Too good of a deal to pass up and I love Mtn Rifles.

Measure the barrel, if its .550 at the muzzle then it will be Mountain rifle, if its .660 then it will be regular stainless BDL

I am pretty sure the SS BDL had 24"barrels.

You may be correct, long action SS came in 24 inch barrels.

99% sure the SA were 24" as well, unless that was just the 6mm Remington.

Mountain rifles had the 22" barrel.

My 7mm-08 SS is not a Mountain rifle it has sporter barrel

Not doubting you one bit but I wonder if that was a special run from Grices or one of the other distributors.

A little more research yesterday still shows all standard chamberings in the BDL SS as having a 24" barrel as have the one I owned or was around. A 22" barrel would make more sense and be a bit more handy for most hunting situations.
