My dad has this 12 gauge with serial #353xx made in Chicopee Falls.

Since Savage bought Stevens, I'm hoping you guys may know something about it. Any idea on year built and value? The gun looks pretty good except for a chunk out of the bottom of the stock which certainly doesn't help.

Have a look for a date code stamped on it, never know, should have one.

Date code, details of condition (like just how big IS that "chunk"?), barrel length, choke, any alterations like a cut stock or added Polychoke, etc. would be needed to get anything close to a real world value.

My guess is that it if it works, it's worth more as a shooter or just for "things that go 'bump' in the night" than it would be to sell it. Just my opinion, of course. (You just never know when you'll need a working pump shotgun....).

I'll have to take another look next time I'm there. The chunk isn't pretty. It's on the bottom of the butt end, probably 2" long.

It was my great grandfathers and would guess it was a run-of-the-mill working man's gun.

These do not seem to have a lot of collector value - even really nice ones seldom bring much. They are a more streamlined version of John Browning's design that became the Steven's 520 and are basically the same gun mechanically. These are very smooth working and very dependable guns.

The 620 first appears in Stevens catalog #57 and is on a price list dated Jan 3, 1927 - it could have been on an earlier dated price list because the trap version, 622, is already listed a discontinued on this list.

In catalog #58 the old hump-back 520 is shown but my copy has it over stamped as discontinued - it had first appears about 1907~1908 in catalog #53 Revised Edition.

The model is not listed as a 620-A in any Stevens catalog up to #43 with a price listed dated March 7, 1946 - this is probably the last seperate Stevens catalog. (The catalog numbers started over again with #40 in 1940 which is why the earlier catalogs have higher numbers.)

The Savage, Stevens, Fox catalog of 1955 is the last I can find with the 620 - still no 'A' so it appears that they never listed that change in the catalogs.

Well I made back to my parents place and see a date code of "O" stamped in front of the trigger guard. Any idea on the year made?

O and Q weren't used as date codes, your looking at an inspection marking.

There is a "P" stamped on the top front of the receiver and also the same on the top of the barrel. Does this help?

Date codes might be to new for a 620, I'll have a look in the catalogs.

Interesting. I just scooped a nice old 620A 12 ga.and have also been scouring the net for a way to determine the year. My serial number is also 353XX. Our shotguns may be sisters!

I also managed to capture a nice old 620 the other day. No serial number. I Circa 1850'd the stocks and have begun the BLO journey. They are quite simple to field strip. This one wasn't particularly dirty. The inner end of the action bar has been repaired. I just read on a forum to NOT dry fire them, as they break firing pins.
