Anyone use it for game the size and toughness of South Texas nilgai ? Rifle is a .45.79 Guide Gun.
My experience has only been deer and a 444 marlin. Kills a deer dead. Short ranges 50 yards or less. I would opt for a tougher bullet for what you are suggesting to hunt
What about the Leverlution 250grn mono flex loads ? They're advertised as a tougher bullet. I've only killed a few deer and hogs using the old 350grn Winchester hollow points.
444 version drops them. I have them wander through sometimes.
I’m probably gonna start trapping them and taking them to auction
Nilgai are wary critters. Getting up close can be a challenge. If it were me, I would opt for a flatter shooting cartridge pushing a tough bullet. I know my 338 RUM will drop them. - T.S.
Our local hound hunters have reported poor performance using that ammo on similar game. The bullets tend to fragment somewhat on tough animals.
If you can sneak in and plant one just behind the shoulder they would work fine, but a lot of things need to be just right to pull that sort of shot off.
If you hand load I’d suggest a 350gr Hornady FN pill. They are a fairly tough pill.
I'll use the Hornady stuff for deer and grab some premium stuff for the nilgai. With the cost of a hunt these days, it makes sense to spring for good ammo.
