This Handi-Rifle was an impulse purchase several years ago. With some light trigger work it is pretty accurate but I have never liked the the bulky plain shape of the stock. I have decided to thin it a bit and see if I can improve the shape/looks. My plain right now is to try to match it to other rifle stocks I have.

Has anyone else worked on one of these? I would love to see the end result & hear anyone's thoughts or ideas.

Looks like there is plenty to work with.

Is this the rifle that Henry Arms acquired?

Laminates can be very hard to work with.

Don’t know if you saw it but rifle magazine has had a series the past couple months on accurizing one and working the stock over

The H&R, NEF single shots are long gone. The machines and tooling were scrapped and/or sold. The China import Model 301 Stevens shotgun appears that a close copy of the old H&R receiver. In fact my H&R 20 gauge and Stevens 301 20 gauge barrels lock up on each frame. Henry's are completely different and made in the US.

Yes there is a lot here to work with. With a little patience I am hoping at worse not to make it any uglier.
Was going to answer the question about NEF but I see that's been done.

hikerbum, I have not worked with laminates much, can you expand on that any more? So far I have started some rough shaping with hand files and don't seem to notice any issues. I did do some checkering on the forend and that could have gone better, some lines were hard to follow and the wood is soft so sharp edges and points could be better in spots.

Have you checked Boyds or other replacement stock makers to see what they offer? Might give you some ideas.

After a lot of hand-wringing, I put a Henry on layaway. They're pretty nice looking as they come, and I'm not looking to acquire a stable of barrels. Once I get my other new stuff sorted out, I'll have it shipped in and see how I like it.

I have a rough idea what I'd like but am still looking around. Will check out Henry's for comparison.
The ability to add additional barrels was the one thing I liked about the NEF guns. Same trigger pull and easy to switch calibers, even shotgun barrels. Please post your Henry when it comes in.

I'd post mine if I knew how.

I don't have any of them left but I might have kept one if it had that stock on it. Nice work.

Looks real good bt8897, now I know how I need to shape the grip.

It's starting to shape up a little, not sure about the cheek piece idea but I can even everything out if it doesn't work.

That’s by far the nicest stock I’ve seen on a NEF. Nicely done Sir.

Life keeps getting in the way but thought I'd share some progress. The cheek piece didn't work out, not quite enough material because of the large bolt hole drilled up the middle. It's slow progress but getting there. Still seems like it's a little thick around the grip, maybe take a little more off of the top edge near the back and still have to round off the base of the grip some more.

Any thoughts on my copy of the old marlin grip base shape?

I changed out one on a .280 to a Choate synthetic. The dimensions on it seem to be just about right. You've got me thinking about working on the original hardwood stock now...

If you are not using the stock what have you got to lose? Take your time and see how it goes. A couple of good wood files is all I have been using.

Good point.I'm going to give it a go...

I finally got it finished. Just haven't had the time to checker it. Might save that for after deer season.
