Does anyone know the dimensions LOP, drop at heel, drop at comb of the Pre '64 M70 "NRA" stock and the Monte Carlo stock? Or perhaps have these been photographed on BSA's (I believe he created it) template?

GunDoc7, Utah708 created the template. I just use the hell out of it because I think it's a valuable as hell tool when trying to visualize the ergos of a stock. Here are some pics of some of my monte carlo pre 64's on Utah708's template if that helps:

Sorry, I don't have an NRA stock or I'd throw it on the template. I don't believe I've ever seen one on this template either. Maybe someone can make a template and throw one on?? Good luck with your search..

winpoor, it would be extremely cool if you made a template and throw some of those national match and target rifles on there, along with your Borden rimrock/pacific research stocks!!!!

It is clear to me you are pretty organized in that you not only have a lot of information, but you can pretty quickly get your hands on it.

That McMillian is a pretty faithful copy of the Pre '64 MC stock.

I actually prefer straighter stocks, and have them on the hard use rifles. But, to me, part of experiencing the history of a Pre '64 is sticking with an original stock. The MCs seem a bit harder to come by than the NRA, so I am trying to determine if the NRA pattern has more drop at comb and heel. I cannot tell if the MC pattern is straighter, or simply has the MC portion "added on."

Maybe someone will take a pic or someone has the dimensions. I cannot find any dimensions in Rule.

Mr Gun Doc, I think you will find more drop at heel for shooting irons in the old low comb NRA stock, Its no problem for me with my long turkey neck BUT I can tell you one thing for sure on the bench with steel buttplate the old stock beats hell out of me! Shooting game you never think or notice! very best WinPoor

I have both. The Hornet is a prewar set up with Lyman 48, the 375 is a 1950 also set up with Lyman 48. I can set them up next to a 59 standard 243 MC, the Alaskan, and the 300H&H so you can get an idea.

As many know, I truly value Mr. Rules's book. It's where I get about 60% of my information. The rest comes from talking to anyone and everyone that was around during the time pre 64's were produced. Here is some information you may like to know Gun Doc:

Taken from page 71 of "The Rifleman's Rifle" book:

"1. The standard rifle, 1936-1963,...................

There was no pistol grip cap, no forearm tip, and (in 1936) no Monte Carlo comb. The stock was refered to as the classic style (previously termed the NRA design) with checkering, done by hand. The standard stock dimensions were: length of pull, 13 1/2"; drop at comb, 1 5/8"; and drop at heel, 2 5/8". "

This is great information for the standard low comb stock which was earlier refered to as the NRA design. The Monte Carlo stock ergo's can be referenced from page 234 of "The Rifleman's Rifle" book:

"Featherweight............
Stock dimensions- Pull - 13 5/8"; drop at comb- 1 3/8"; at heel- 2 3/8"; at Monte Carlo 1 3/4"

Standard:
Stock dimensions- Pull - 13 5/8"; drop at comb- 1 3/8"; at heel- 2 3/8"; at Monte Carlo 1 3/4"

Westerner- Alaskan:
Stock dimensions- Pull - 13 5/8"; drop at comb- 1 3/8"; at heel- 2 3/8"; at Monte Carlo 1 3/4".."

GunDoc, there's so much information in that book that it makes my head spin. . Good stuff in there for sure...

If Im reading this right the old NRA stock is 1/4 inch lower at top of comb at buttplate. very best winpoor

Yep, winchesterpoor, that's the way I read it too. It seems like more when you look at the two stocks, but maybe the MC comb messes with our perception.

I would like to see both on a template though.

I will try to get some pics up. In the middle of laying 600 foot of hardwood floor in the dining and family room. Stopped for a rest and to refill the coffee cup.

I have a few low comb stocks laying around, one pre war and one post. Maybe a few pics of those as well. They aren't for sale as they are going to be cut down to youth size so my 4 daughters will begin their careers with the Hornet, and work up to the 243, then the 270 . And of one gets squirrley, throw the stock on the Alaskan and let her rip!

gundoc, have you found a stock yet? You may want to keep an eye on this one. It looks like it's had tru-oil rubbed on, but could be cleaned up if you know what your are doing:
