I bought a 742 woodmaster at the local gun show today. Was advertised as new never fired. The gun looked to be 100 percent but after getting home doing further investigation I noticed a spot that looked like it was taped off and refinished on the barrel. After looking at some other new in the box guns online I saw they all had the same line. Which means it was done this way at the factory.

So my question is does anyone know why this hard line is on the blueing of the barrel? Just wondering why Remington did them this way?

That is where the barrel lug is(terminology?) Different grade metal, so Different color shade of blue. All the 760/742 variations have it. Nice one you have there. congrats.

Thank you Sweets! It was advertised like new never fired. I thought I looked it over good but when I got home I noticed it. I was able to pick this one up and a 870 wingmaster in 12ga that was also like new never fired for a fair price.

Nice pair from Remingtons heyday. Guns like those have filled a lot of freezers over the years

I’ve been needing a few classic work horses around!

Two fine Remingtons you’ve got there, congratulations. What caliber is the 742? I have my father’s 1969 model 742 in 30-06. He and I have killed a lot of deer with it. I still pack it once a season for sentimental reasons.

I have my Dad"a 742 in 308 win. He bought it in 1972-3. He used it as his one hunting rifle. I have shot it and it shoots well. I have thought of hunting with it. But after reading on the web, I worry that it will break. So an occasional trip to the range with mild hand loads and back in the safe.
