Gents - finally getting ready to tinker with this... have 760 and H4350 on hand... any tried and true loads or sage advice?

Used 160 Partitions and IMR4350 in my .280 with great success on elk for many years. I would surmise that H4350 would perform the same.
Good accuracy and lethal. The elk didn't know what hit 'em.

Ditto. And add Norma MRP, & the 7828, being the SSC version.

Either 4350 may be OK, but IMHO, they are both faster than optimum with that bullet weight & you will leave some velocity on the table.

Newer RL-26 is likely a better choice today but I haven't used it in that combination.

In my 284 Win (similar case size to 280) I found the 160 NP to be a real elk thumper.

I used 4350 a lot but turned to RL17 and have never looked back.

The 160 NP is a bit much for deer, but perfect for elk.

My 2 cents.

The plan is to develop the load as an elk and bigger round. (I use a 6.5cm with 129 interbonds for deer or a 30-30 depending on the situation.)

Yep, RL26 in mine with the 160 Trophy Bonded Tip averages over 2900 fps and great accuracy.

According to "Guns & Ammo" Dec. 2013, MRP and RL22 are the same powder, subject only to lot-to-lot differences.

I got great velocity with IMR7828SSC and the 160 gr. Speer Grand Slam. Accuracy, at least in my rifle wasn't so good. Tried the long discontinued WMR and got equal speed to the 7828 and .75" average groups. Probably could do just as well with the 7828 if I wanted to take the time playing with seating depth and the like. I see o reason why it wouldn't work just as well with the 160 gr. Noslers.

So they say..............looks a little different to me, though.

But I've used the same charges of both for 20 years.

That is genuinely impressive..............if the pressure is not too high.

JB, whattaya think?????????????????

Or does anyone know what QL says about that load? Alliant does not list a 280 load with RL-26.

Tatelaw, Sounds almost too good to be true. Without knowing for sure, my guess is your pressures may be in the red zone.

MontanaMan, I wish Alliant did...I emailed them maybe three years ago about 280 data and was told they haven't tested for it. I worked up to 61.5 with the 160 Trophy Bonded Tip and then backed down to 60.0, that gave me a five shot average of 2980 fps. I plugged it into QL and it predicted 2978 fps at 64K.

Quick Load says RL-26 is magic pixie dust and he's within the pressure standards for a .270 Winchester or should be fine in a modern bolt action rifle:

Code
Cartridge : .280 Rem.
Bullet : .284, 160, Nosler AccuBond 54932
Useable Case Capaci: 58.204 grain H2O = 3.779 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.330 inch = 84.58 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch = 558.8 mm
Powder : Alliant Reloder-26 *C

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 0.833% of nominal charge.

280 uses the .30-06 case, right? What about looking at .30-06 powders for 165 grain bullets?

If valid, maybe Big Game?

I was just looking back through some of my old posts and noticed I never replied on here to the question about my load. I'm using 60.5 grains so it lines up pretty well with the Quickload prediction shown above.
