I have a LH anni bolt gun. The basic hunting model.
It has always been a disappointment accuracy wise.
I owned it's twin before and that thing would shoot!
I'm just curious what everyone else's opinion is on a reline to 17M2?
I can do the work myself, I'll just have to find my tools.

I have a lined 10/22 barrel in 17 HM2 that worked fine before I decided that the 10/22 wasn't the right platform for that cartridge..

I don't know of anyone shooting 17M2 and can't remember seeing ammo anywhere. I guess depends on what you want. Were it me, I'd reline to 22lr or rebarrel and call good at 22lr. For me, 22lr would get a ton more use at a better cost.

CCI/Hornady 17 HM2 ammo is usually available on-line, but seldom seen on dealers' shelves. For a serious tree squirrel hunter there is no better cartridge for that market niche than the 17 HM2.

17 HM2 ammo is more expensive than low to mid-grade .22 LR ammo, but in rimfire ammo you almost always pay more for more performance.

Ammoseek lists a bunch at about the cost of Club or a trifle more, $.17-$.18 a pop. I look at rifles for sale from time to time, and wouldn’t mind scoring a barrel for my 457, or even an entire 452, Marlin, or Savage at a reasonable price.

What remains a mystery is the quality of current ammo. I bought one of the Whittaker specials and it was nothing to write home about, accuracy wise, or in appearance. Most M2 fans seem to be groovin’ on ammo piles they acquired way back when.

I called Anschutz. $350 will get me a factory 17M2 barrel installed. Expensive for me right now. A plan for someday.
I like the little 17M2. It's spot on as a pest control round. Ammo can be a challenge, but 500 rounds would be a lifetime supply for me.

I have around 12K rounds on hand, 3,500 Eley/Remington, 5,000 CCI, and 3,500 Hornady. Unfortunately, 800 rounds of the Hornady is 15.5 grain NTX ammo that doesn't shoot worth a damn in any of my rifles, not even in my Anschutz 1502.

That sounds like a screaming deal to me. Skip the Starbucks for a while and save your nickels.

Not a brag, more like an example of proper prior planning. I've got around 30K rounds of .22 LR on the shelves too.

Teal: I have been to three "serious" gun shops in the last 10 days and all had Hornady 17 Mach2 ammo on hand. I have a lifetime supply so wasn't much interested but one shop here in SW Montana was selling it for a moderately high $10.99 per box of 50 (no sales tax in Montana).
For my varied and extensive usages the 17 Mach2 is preferred over my Rifles and pistols in 22 L.R.

For $350.00 I would advise the original poster to have his Rifle re-barreled!
I have a heavy barrel Anschutz Model 1502 in caliber 17 Mach2 and in the Varmint and small game fields it performs wonderfully and is WONDERFULLY accurate.
The trigger on my Anschutz is just sublime.
Long live the super-nifty 17 Mach2 cartridge!

After I get my a 10-22 and set it up
I've been waiting years for a decision on my military disability claim, 2 months ago they told me any time now.
Then maybe.

Nessmuk: Good luck on the settling of that claim.
Having dealt with the "V.A." in similar situations with my father and friends I know they are slow - but in my experiences/observations they were fair.
Again good luck.
