Maybe I worded my post incorrectly but I am very much aware the 30-06 is enough gun … I was mostly concerned with bullet choice. I feel the Core-Lokt that my boys rifle shoots so well and the Hornady InterLock that mine likes so well might not perform as well as a partition or accubond.

I shoot 140gr Hornady Interlocks out of my .275 Rigby & 150gr InterLocks out of my .303 British. Based on the results I've gotten, I'm a fan. They've done a really good job for me on deer-sized game. YMMV.

Appreciate your comment! Yeah I took a muley with the Interlock on my first western hunt a few years back out in Montana and I was happy with its performance. I was thinking these Aoudad might be a tad tougher animal and I’m pretty sure when speaking to our outfitter he mentioned wanting us guys to shoot these rams directly in the front shoulders.

Of course I generally like to aim for that front shoulder when taking a deer with a rifle as well so really not much difference

They'll work fine, partly because aoudads are "deer-sized game," and cup-and-core 150s have worked fine on such game at .30-06 velocities for a long time....

I'm poking a little fun here, Ricky, so please don't take it personally, but where is the "rear shoulder"?

I generally shoot for the front axle hub too. Seems to make a good impression.

Over the decades have seen a few animals shot through the "rear shoulders," which isn't particularly deadly--and also tends to ruin considerable meat....

I’m no expert but if I was going to use my 30-06 on one, I’d take a high quality bullet like a partition, accubond, ttsx etc.

As it happens, I’m going down for my first aoudad hunt this November, the guide said bring a 300 mag so I figured as long as I’m paying him for his expertise, I should do what he says. I’m planning g to shoot a 200g partition.

With all that in mind, I’ve killed mountain goats and large moose as well as some good size bears with a 30-06.

Cup and core bullets have killed a lot of elk launched out of the 06 and smaller calibers for us. A lot of those have been taken with Core-Lokt's out of a green box.

Correct. If the guide had a brain he would ask "what do you shoot best?"...and go from there. All this "gotta have a magnum" bs is just that, bullshi t.

I’d say so, killed half dozen with a 223. They are no harder to kill than a deer

Our outfitter told me to bring whatever rifle we shoot best and use whatever ammo we are used to using out of them. The 30/06s get the nod in that category … my boy and I both are super confident shooting our 06s. I have a 6.5 Creed (yes I almost hate to admit it) that shoots the 143gr ELD-Xs pretty darn phenomenal as well but I’m hung up on my 30/06 and always will be. It’s a Win70 Stainless Classic that I bought brand new back in the 1990s and I just love shooting the thing! I wouldn’t take nothing else with me on a hunt and if I did I’d second guess my decision the whole trip. Haha! Naturally, because of my love for my 06 my 16yr old son has followed in my footsteps and wanted a 30/06 for his 1st rifle, which we got him a Weatherby High Country, and the kid shoots it like it’s an extension of his arm. Lol. He does outstanding with it to say the least!

i agree with bringing the 300 Savage and would be funny to see how the guide reacts ? i have always thought a lot about the great old 30-06 ,but if the guide told me to bring a 300 mag. i would show up and say i am going to just use my old Ruger #1 single sho-25 caliber with a 100 gr. bullet bet that would make his eye`s get upset. but funny
