Seems to me that Williams also sold a peep sight that fit their base for use as an emergency "back-up."

Yes, here is one for the Savage 99. They called it an Ace in the Hole sight back then.

What’s the consensus on the Burris QD rings and the Warne QD rings on top of Weaver bases?

Warne QD rings don't have an integrated recoil lug, so they are easy to lose in the field.

I use Durasight QD rings if I really think that I'm going to swap scopes in the field, but they only come in medium and high, so not a great fit for all applications.

I think the best thing on Weaver bases are Weaver rings.

I just got my first 99 after waiting too many years to own one. A 1958 EG in excellent condition with all the factory options.

I've also obtained an older Leupold Vari X II 2X7X33 scope.

I want to be able to mount it without removing the rear buckhorn sight.

I would prefer a 2 piece mount and I'm looking for suggestions on which mounts and rings to use.

I would like to keep the entire set up as close to period correct as possible.

Thank y'all in advance for the ideas and suggestions.

I think Weaver is the only one making modern 2 piece bases. They had some quality issues for a while, but haven't heard much about problems in the last couple years. It'd be #14 and #19 bases.

If you want vintage 2 piece bases, you might find a few different types watching eBay. Redfields, older Weavers, Pachmayers, even Savage sold bases for a while...

I don't think the modern Weaver bases look much different than anything you'd have bought at the time.

I like the Weaver quad lock rings. Have a few sets on mine and they work well and i like the look of them.

I loudly Second the recommendation for the Weaver quad lock rings. The vintage Weaver rings are a pain to set up since they turn the scope as the screws are tightened.

The current Weaver 14 and 19 bases are identical to what was built on day 1 of manufacture. It's the cleanest and lightest thing to use.

They also make the more traditional looking steel Grand Slam.

And that leaves the challenging question of, given the 2x7 Leipold mounted over the semi buckhorn Savage sight, what height rings do you buy?

I would advise to replace the rear sight with a folding or blank and mount lower to the barrel.

Savage...never say "never".
