Looking to get back into flyfishing. I have a cheap-o Eagle Claw but looking at used graphite rods. 8' or so, 2 piece, 6 weight line for trout and some river bass.
What should I look at and what to avoid?

Welcome back. I took up fly fishing again February 2023 after a 20+ year break. It has hooked me bigtime. So much that I missed the deer rut last year as I fished right through it. It's the rut here again right now and I still haven't been out hunting, rather I'm planning where to go fishing next week rather than hunting. I'm at an age where I follow my heart not my head or the calendar.

I've been buying mostly Loop rods from Sweden but I have a couple of TFO. The TFO are good rods for the relatively low price (LK Legacy and Blue Ribbon). If you can find a second hand one they'd be a good buy.

I was looking towards graphite. Is it worth the extra money?

On ebay there is a virtually new echo sr3 which was top of the line 9 years ago for 79 bucks. That was a 300 dollar plus rod. 9ft 5 weight. Look on ebay. Graphite is not necessarily more expensive than glass. Depends on what you are wanting to do

That is only a bid amount - not a BUY IT NOW amount - you'd have to wait until the auction is done to get the final price; I assure you it will be much more than $79

I was just going to jump in and mention the LK legacy, I just got one in 6wt 9’6” with a fighting butt, I threw on a Ross animas 5/6 reel I had and a new weight forward line from airflo. This should be a great rod for throwing heavier flies here where I live.

I looked past TFO for years but this LK legacy is a very nice rod, nice hardwear, feels great.

To the OP, I have an RL Winston Nimbus I'd sell you for $350, if that interests you at all. It's a 9ft 5wt. 4 piece. I think these were around 600 new.
PM me if you want to know more.
I like it a lot because it's an all graphite rod that has the same materials as more budget friendly rods, but was still built in the US with the Winston build quality control and I assume more R&D.

But I'm general, several of these companies will make a mid tier version of their rods that are still all graphite. These are worth a look.

Graphite or glass, really depends on what you're doing and how you want the rod to feel. Modern glass is worlds different and better than what most guys realize.... it is also stronger and more forgiving than graphite. I fish probably 50/50 graphite and glass. They both have places in your arsenal. If looking into a new rod, the first questions you need to ask yourself are, what types of fishing am I going to be doing (small dries, terrestrials, nymphing, dry dropper rigs, streamers), what range am I going to be fishing (distance of casts), and what size fish am I going to be chasing. Pick a good quality line and match that to the proper rod.

They have a retail store close to me in York, PA. Their rods get mixed reviews. But at the price?

Just built my own glass rod. Been working great for some trout. Haven’t used it much but I think I like it a lot better than graphite. As for what you want to use it for a cheap combo will work.

I love the old fenglass rods. I have newer rods but they don't have the soft touch of the Fenglass rods. My old 71/2' rod will be out for its 51st anniversary trip in a short time.

On an Oris Clearwater II it is marked "865-2", "mid 6.5".
WHat does this mean?
