All I've read about this new round has been on this forum....what is the parent case and how is it formed? I get the impression it's the .223 case necked down to .204..is this how it was designed?

From the Ruger Web Page
" This small, fast, and efficient new cartridge is the result of another joint development effort between Sturm, Ruger and Hornady Manufacturing Company. The 204 RUGER shares the same case head and overall length cartridge as the 223 Remington, but uses a slender new 20 caliber, 32 grain, V-MAXTM bullet."

The parent case, according to the Ruger website, is the .222 Remington Magnum. This was probably done for three reasons.
First, in necking down to .20, the .222 RemMag neck would still be adequately long. The .223 has a fairly short neck and it would become critical if it was used as a parent case.
Second, the .222 RemMag is a superior case to the .223 Rem (making that statement makes me cry). Gad, I love the .223 Remington, but the ONLY reason that it won the race over the .222 RemMag was the availability of inexpensive, high quality brass and cheap ammo. The .222 RemMag is simply a better cartridge case.
Thirdly, Hornady would be able to totally control the heaviness and quality of the brass from the git-go. From what I hear, the brass is absolutely first-rate.

I thought it was a 222 Mag case. But the language I quoted seems to indicate differently.
Oh well . . . .

BMT,
Not necessarily. The .222 RemMag and the .223 Rem chare the same case head. Also, the max case length of the .223 is 1.760," while the .222 RemMag is 1.850" -- a scant .090" difference. Considering that the .204" bullets are stubby little things, it is entirely likely that the new .204 Ruger and the .223 Remington will share the same overall length.

Well . . . . we've all seen this before. A distinction without a difference! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
