Hey fellas, anyone care to give me their opinion on the Lyman Great Plains flintlock rifle? I have been shooting T/C's for years, but feel I just have to have a Lyman, how do they shoot? Is the lock of good quality? Is the frizzen hard? and I want a .54, I have a Lyman publication and it says on one page the twist on the Plains rifle is 1/60 on one page and the next page gives the specs and says the twist is 1/48 on the .54, I dont want 1/48, am shooting RB's only, so i want the 1/60 twist. is my catalogue messed up, what is the twist on the .54? thanks guys...gutpile

I have one, 1:60 is the twist, I get 25-40 shots from a sharp english flint, and then resharpen it, lock seems to work good. I use 90grs of 3f/.530 ball/.018ticking patch, about 1-1.5" @50 / 3-4 @100(on a good day), from a rest. Absolutly no trouble with the gun. It's a little on the heavy side for my style of hunting but OK.<P>Doug

Gutpile, I shoot a GPR in .50 cal. I used to shoot a T/C but sold it in favor of the Lyman. I really like the rifle and would highly recommend it. One problem with it is the hardness of the frizzen. I had around 400-500 rounds through mine and noticed deep ridges on the face of the frizzen.I took the gun to a store that specializes in frontstuffers and had them replace the frizzen, $15 and put in a tapered touchole. The owner told me all T/C's and Lymans have soft frizzens and need replaced as they are only case hardened. He said with the tweaking we gave it, it was an excellent rifle. I also replaced the iron sights with a set of fiber optics(very fine front sight for my old eyes. This shop/store has a site under RMC Sports in Mingoville, PA. The twist is 1/60 in my .50. I shoot 90GR of 2F and the roundball. The buffalo bullets are advertised to shoot well in slow twists but they don't shoot worth a darned in mine. Hope this helps with the decision. Keep the smoke flying! Rick
