The Remington Spartan is just a gussied up version of the Baikal.
A few months ago I had a chance to test this model in .223 for a gun dealer buddy who got some early samples.
http://www.spartangunworks.com/spr18_nickel.htmIts not a bad looking gun(the cosmetics are better than the NEF) but the finish is a bit on the rough side and the action was very stiff. The thing was also crammed full of cosmoline--very nasty to clean out.
They have a 12 twist barrel in .223 and won't stabilize any bullet over about 60 grains but the accuracy with 52 grain Black Hills and 45 grain Remington factory loads wasn't too bad, averaging around 1.25-1.5 inches at 100.
The thin contour barrel heats up pretty quick and the trigger is draggy (about 5lbs) and after about 40 rounds downrange the firing pin malfunctioned and it started missfiring about every third shot. My friend sent it back and it was promptly (3days) fixed and returned to his shop.
All in all its not too bad for a $200.00 (that's what my friend is selling them for +tax) rifle and will likely be better after Remington gets some of the production kinks ironed out.
Hope This Helps,
HBB
