I've seen a lot of praise for the 155 gr Scenar and have been loading them in my 308. Not killed anything with them yet, but have seen enough here to trust them to work. But recently picked up 100 rounds of this.

https://estore.thecmp.org/Catalog/Item/4C308CS167-100

They are REALLY accurate in my rifle, more so than the 155's. And at the price will buy more. My question is; will the 167 gr bullet be as effective for hunting as the 155's, or should I consider this a target bullet only. This isn't a high BC bullet,(.470) and they aren't loaded very hot, 2660 fps according to the info on the box. I didn't verify that with a chronograph. But they sure are accurate in my rifles.

I’ve got some in 30-06, which they stopped making. 🤬 haven’t tried them yet though.

The 155’s are one ragged hole accurate in my 308 & 300 WSM. I have taken two pigs with the 308, dropped ‘em like a sack of feed.

Scenars are meaner.

I’d be a happy boy with a pallet of 155’s rolling at 3k

Thanks. It appears there isn't a lot of info about the 167 gr bullet. I didn't know they even existed until recently, let alone were discontinued. I picked up 100 rounds when at the firing range at Talladega last week

https://thecmp.org/ranges/talladega-marksmanship-park/

At $1.25 per round with Lapua bullets and brass It is hard to justify hand loading. And they shoot as well as the 155's in my rifle. I'm just unsure about using them to hunt.

It can be ordered from the link in my OP.

And Midway is still showing that bullet as available for hand loading.

usually the brass alone is a buck. it is real precise,. i use in my 6ppc, .243 , .222, 6.5-284, 30-06 , i have some 300 win mag they made briefly. the 167's are awesome out the 30-06. i shoot a lot of 123 and 139 scenar as well out the 6.5-284s.

I'd feel perfectly confident with any shot I was willing to take using a 167 Scenar out of a 308 at south of 2700MV on any game animal in the Lower 48. They don't have as high a BC as the 155, but the extra weight and slower velocity are not going to be a hamper at any sane range. Hunt 'em. They'll work fine.

That's what I'm thinking. It's almost worth buying the loaded ammo @ $1.25 per round even if it shoots poorly just to get the Lapua brass.

IIRC the 155 is longer than the 167. When you section a 155 it has a big hollow cavity up front before the lead starts and the lead core looks like a flat nose down in the jacket a ways. I'm not sure how or if that effects big game performance. I almost always ran the 155s and used to buy them buy the thousand.

I had some big lot to lot differences with the 155s years ago though. The two different lots had significant differences in hp size and bullet length but they both weighed 155g. The new lot didn't shoot nears as good as my older one so I switched to other things for my midrange 308 and ar 10 loads so I've since switched to Hornady 178g bullets for mid range target and blasting.
