I want to try some 175 Nosler Partitions and Swift A-Frames in one of my 280 AI's. Anyone care to share any of their favorite powders.

Thanks

I’d be looking at 7828, RL23, RL26, maybe H1000 as well.

We goofed around with 175’s in my brothers 280 Ackley and it loaded along easy at 2800 and was real nice shooting with H 4831SC.

Try IMR-7828SSC. I recently tried it in a 280 rem with 175gr sierra gamekings. My charge was 57.0grs for 2758fps. Shot a good group with them. Definitely worth a repeat

I used R22 with 168's. Never tried 175's but imagine it would do well.

Look at IMR7828SSC. It was pretty good with the 168 gr ABLR in my 280AI.

Thanks for the suggestions. Looks like starting with 7828 might be a good idea, but I have all the other powders listed except for RL23.

Wasp,
I'm just curious but what are you going to hunt with the 175 gr PT? FWIW, my wife shot a bull moose with her Nosler M48 280AI with the 160 gr PT at 262 yards. She made 3 perfect shots, all behind the shoulder. The first two exited behind the off shoulder and the third bullet was recovered in the off shoulder. The MV is 3050 fps.
The 160 gr PT is a pretty good bullet.

This .

7828ssc/h-1000/h-4831 all work well with 175/180 bullets .

JD, I have no doubt the 160 PT would be effective on about anything a guy would use a .284 bullet for.
I might have an opportunity for buffalo hunt on private land in Zimbabwe and there might be an opportunity to shoot meat animals to feed the citrus pickers on the ranch to include eland. No intention of shooting buffalo with the 280 AI.
Just threw the question out there and intend to try a few 175 A-Frame, and 175 PT;s along with the 160's of both manufacturers

Hi Mike ..

Hi ol Mike. Thanks for the response. Creiden is doing well and still testing negative. Only has to test every 6 months now. We have not forgotten all you did for him. Thank You

Best to you and yours

Mike

Thanks Wasp. Sounds like an exciting opportunity! I would agree with you and go with the 175 gr PT. It's reassuring to know that you have all the penetration you can get just in case.
Best of luck to you on your hunt.

First load with 7828 went 1.2 " with the Nosler PT and .8" with the A-Frame with Nosler's most accurate load from their book.

Slow but for the first try a guy could certainly live with a sub 1" load if it repeats.

I'll try other powder but the 7828 sure is encouraging. I'll test the 160 PT and A-Frame as well.

175gn Accubond (210 Primer) 22" barrel over Oehler 35P ( my velocities are never corrected to muzzle velocities and are quoted as actual average readings @ 15feet)
56gn Rel 17 = 2884fps
56gn H 4350 = 2742fps
57gn IMR 4831 = 2742fps
58.5 H 4831 = 2572fps
57gn Rel 22 = 2561fps
62gn Rel 26 = 2892fps
61gn H1000 = 2511fps
61gn Retumbo = 2523fps

Based on the above, I would suggest 2750-2800fps is realistic for the first 4 powders with Rel 26 producing another 50fps or so and the slower H1000 and Retumbo having insufficient powder space to offer potential. I have dropped usage of H 4831 as it has not been competitive in generating realistic velocity potential in a range of cartridges I use.

175gn Partition
56gn Rel 17 = 2782fps
63gn Rel 26 = 2896fps (using CCI 200 primer)

NOTE: OAL plays a part in pressure and velocity and reducing OAL eliminated some isolated sticky cases (where one in the group was sticky only) while working up so was a consideration in determining both accuracy and velocity using Rel 26.

Drop 10% and work up please.
