I noticed that Remington seems to have discontinued the 504 bolt action rimfire. Why? It was only out for a couple years, and always seemed like a nice rifle to me.

I bought one in the first year in 17 Mach 2. It's a dandy little rifle. I was really supprised that it wasn't in the new catalog. They sent alot of time and money to drop it as soon as they did. Haven't heard what the problem was. Maybe Mule Deer could shed some light on this one.

Nobody will buy them in great numbers.

For $300 less you can have a 10-22 with loads of parts and accessories.

For the money it didn't even make a blip on my rimfire radar. Nice rifles to be sure, seemed a bit proud though.

2nd factor, will be argued by hardcore Rem guys: When I think heirloom type firearm, which I think $500+ dollar rimfires fall into, Big Green never even enters my thinking.

I agree, I'd love to have a 504 at a reasonable price.

They don't have the high quality wood or anything else "special" to rate the price too me.

Maybe I'll find a good used one someday.

Take a look at what is replacing the 504; the 547, and it is a winner.

Do you have a link to the 547? I couldn't find it.

This is only a guess, but based on some experience.

The 504 just never shot all the well when chambered in .22 Long Rifle. I had a test rifle for a few months, and never could get it to shoot under an inch or so for 5 shots at 50 yards even with target ammo. I also know several other people who got the same level of accuracy. In a time when many better .22's will shoot into .5 or so (whether an out of the box Kimber or a 10/22 with a custom barrel and trigger), a $600 .22 that only does an inch at 50 ain't much.

The 547 has a Shilen barrel and "match" chamber, and supposedly shoots into 1/2" at 50. These are the first attributes listed in the details on the 547 on the Remington website, which kind of substantiate my guess.

Your "for the money" thought is very valid. Take a look at the Model 5 - they took the Charles Daly/Zasatva (my CD/Z shoots very well), renamed it, and jacked the price up more than a hundred bucks. The idea of price running proportionally with quality is something that went by the wayside long ago.

Yeah, when sub-$300 CZ;'s can group in 1/2" then people are going to buy them, even if not as pretty as a $600 rifle....

I remember the Remington M541S and M581 as being shooters, but they are long discontinued. I heard from some friends who tried them that the the M504 did not group well, so I am not surprised they are gone.

The Rem M40XR rifles shot very well, but were very expensive too.

I will just continue to dink along with my M52 Sporter (mine is the Browning copy of the M52C).

It seems funny that my old 511P appears to group better than the 504.It's a shame they don't make guns like they used to!

Generally speaking, the 504 didn't shoot accurately. Too many shooters had complaints, and the rifle went away. Only one guy I know took on the mission of making one shoot, and he did succeed, but with a LOT of work.

I really like the looks of this rifle, and I'm positive that it will shoot 1/4" groups at 50 yards with the right ammo, maybe better.
Yes, it is sad that Rem discontinued the 541 series. They were excellent rifles in every respect, the ones with the adjustable triggers that is. I had a 541S.. My son now has it...
I haven't read any actual shooting reports on the new Weatherby/Anschutz rifle. Wonder how it's faring?

Now that is a nice looking rifle. For the money I'd still buy a Kimber or Cooper though. I know the Cooper would be more, but I suspect you'd be getting more, especially since you can have the magnum options.

Moot point anyhow, for me, as I'm not in the market for a $1000 rimfire this year.

I suspect you will have lots of company.

Used to heckle a guy at my gunclub, who bragged incessantly about his 541 rifles. Whenever he got too high on his horse, I'd bring up that they had exactly the same plastic mag as the 581 youth model that I bought for my son when he was 10. ;o)

Not enought people take a good .22 seriously.
That's a pity. They miss out on the pleasure of owning a really nice rifle that is inexpensive to shoot, and will usually receive enough use to give them more pleasure than all their big bores combined.

If you can afford an Anschutz or Kimber Super America, go for it.

A really nice used Marlin 39 can be had for under $350.00.
The 9422 and BL-22 are great little guns.

It is a shame Browning didn't have the sales to keep the A-Bolt Medallion .22 LR, .22 WMR, and .22 Hornet going.

Nice lookin' gun, that 547, but I already get 1/4" groups quite regularly with my 580 and 581. For a $1000, I'll pass.

$1,000 will buy you a Kimber Super America with Leupold 4x Rimfire scope.
