What velocity can I expect from a 4" barrel using HS-6 with 158 JHPs in .357 Mag? I know I can use other powder for more velocity. However, HS-6 is what I want to use. Hodgdon says max load is 9.5 gr of HS-6.

Roughly 1125 for me at 9.5 grs HS-6 158 XTP and a CCi 500.
Exact same load but with a Lee 358-158-RF cast bullet ran 1230.
Both from my 4” 686-5 Mountain Gun

There is a lot to be said for cleaning up your part can inventory whenever you can. Some other powder might gain 50-100 fps but at today's prices use up all your powder. Mb

I got turned on to HS-6 during the powder shortage, I really like it in my Colt SAA in 45 Colt with cast bullts. I think I'll try it in my .357 as well.
You just have to be very careful with the low loading density of this powder so as not to double charge a case. Same deal with Bullseye or WW231 so not a deal breaker.

Hs-6 is a great powder. Go by the data book and you'll find a good load. It makes a good deer load for a .45 Colt.

Mark in GA Mark, You were spot on. I tried it in the Taurus 66 4" barrel the other day. With 9.5 gr and a Norma 158 gr JHP, it gave me an average of 1,120 fps. The most accurate load was around the 9.1 gr mark. Thanks for the information.
