I see Hornady makes a .308 125gr FMJ bullet. Was wondering how it would work in an AR. Any here have experience with a 125gr bullet in the 308 AR? If so what powder worked in this platform? Need a load that stays under 50,000 PSI.

I have shot the hornady TAP 115 grain Vmax ammo in a 308 AR.

Quite accurate. Wind moves it around past 200 yards.

The 125 should be fine

Never hand loaded anything in 308 except 175 SMKs

God luck

Was hoping someone had experience with this weight bullet in the AR platform. In a bolt action, many different powders can be used. In the AR type action their are powders in a specific burning rage that function the action safely & properly. Powders like H-4895 & Varget.

Just take the powder charge from your 150 or 168 or even 175gr load and seat a 125 instead. Makes a wonderful, accurate, low-recoil load especially with stick powder.

Any of the normal sticks will work - 4895, 4064, Varget, AR Comp, Re-15, N-140, etc.

Ball works too (748, BLC-2, etc), but unless you have a muzzle break they don't seem to be much less recoil due to the rocket effect of their muzzle blast.

With a gas gun, port pressure will have more effect on cycling, than peak pressure.

Most M80 ball ammo uses a 147-150gr bullet and a powder charge around 41-42 gr of powder.

So a powder charge of around 41-42 gr should provide similar gas volume/port pressure.

I'd look into a loading manual and find a load for the 125gr bullet that gives suitable performance at around 41-42 grains of powder. Something with a burn rate similar to RL-7, or RL-10 should get you in the ballpark.

This is what I've found.

Warning! Notes: All handloads were fired from a Colt LE901 with a 16-inch barrel. The three-shot groups were fired at 100 yards over a Shooting Chrony Beta Master chronograph 10 feet in front of the muzzle. Winchester cases and Winchester Large Rifle primers were used throughout. The Leupold Mark 4 3.5-10x 40mm scope was set on 10x. (Rifle AR Special Edition - Fall, 2013)

Code
Wt.	Bullet	Powder Charge	Velocity
125	NBT TAC	49.0	2908

Warning! Notes: Sun Devil AR, 22-in. barrel. Velocity was measured with an Oehler M35P chronograph at 8 feet from the gun's muzzle. Accuracy is the average of two or more five-shot groups fired from a benchrest.

Code
Wt.	Bullet	Powder	Charge	Velocity
125	Sierra	H-335	47.0	3016
