I have a standard pre-64 M70 Winchester in .30-06 that I would like to have re-barreled to .338 Win Mag. If I have the .338 barrel installed, would I need to make any other changes to the rifle? I believe that the case on the .30-06 is the same as the .338 win mag case, so would that be correct...only a barrel change would be needed? Thanks for the help.

30-06 has a bolt face of .473 IIRC. 338 WM is a .532 IIRC. Follower is most likely different also.

The 30-06 and the 338 Win Mag are two completely different cartridges, not even close.

bolt face needs to be opened up, rails will likely need massaging and mag box lengthened.

Sounds like a great way to take a $1,000 gun, add $500+ in parts and labor and ending up with a $750 gun!

A standard pre 64 M70 winchester in 30-06 is hardly a $1000 gun.

I see from your location you are behind enemy lines in Kalifornia but here in the midwest (Wisconsin) good luck finding any pre-64 M70 in good shape for under $1000. I have found some in the past year for under $1000 but they were pretty beat up and they were still $800-$900. And they did sell for those prices. I know people say that a '06 is only worth $500-$600 but I would sure like to find one. I want to find a '06 that I can rip apart to make a 35 Whalen but I won't rip it apart unless it is already messed with.

I did just this with a model 70 a while ago. Although possible, you need to change the bolt face, extractor and feed rails. The mag box is the same size. Yo also need to machine under the feed rails like the original magnums were done. You could go with a 338-06 with only a barrel change. Email me if you are interested.

Just make the caliber a 338-06 or 338-06AI instead of the 338WM and it should work.
I used the action for a 270/25-06/30-06 off my Sako m75 to do a 338-06AI.

Replace the barrel with a 35 whelen or have yours rebored to 35 whelen. You'll be good to go and you won't screw up a good action.
