Just got the new Cabela's catalog and saw their new "limited ed" rifles. The Win 70 257 Roberts super grade lightweight model caught my eye. Any possibility that Winchester is going to make this a standard item? ie. without the engraved bottom metal? The 264 Mag sporter also looks very nice.

Looks good, but not for me at $1700. Listed at 7 lbs. Put that in a standard offering, even standard Featherweight furniture, and I'd be in trouble.

And a 7x57 while they're at it.

Do I hear 1:8 6mm with a 3" box while we're at it?

I think the shorty M70s come with a 3.1" mag box already. When they build my Featherweight 6mm, I don't want them shortening the box on it! (And monkeys might fly out of my butt.)

I'm not following the logic guys...If one wanted a featherweight or a regular sporter Model 70 in 257 Roberts, 7 x 57, 6.5 x 55 or 6mm Remington ( all coool cartridges).... why not just pick up one, new or used and rebarrel the darn thing?

certainly would come in cheaper than the $1700 price tag, and also would stand a good chance of being more accurate than what the factory would turn out...

granted a super grade has a lot cooler stock.. I've had ONE Super Grade Rifle... the stock was gorgeous on and I was at the right place at the right time when it was thrown on sale post hunting season...

but the stock came off, as I didn't want to damage such a thing of beauty, a synthetic stock went on it for hunting... and there it stays..

myself, my favorite cartridge is a 6.5 x 57.. and I wanted one in my favorite action, a Model 70,, plus I wanted a 28 inch barrel in a heavy magnum contour... this was my idea of the ideal antelope rifle...or a 'beanfield' rifle...

well ya know the factory was NEVER going to make one of those..
but a Model 70 in 30/06 in a post season close out for $298 happened.. and a custom Pac Nor barrel and the gun smithing came together for $350....

same thing for a featherweight in 6.5 x 55 with a 25 inch barrel on it.. my other desired cartridge/rifle combo at the time....

now I just need to get around to a 6mm Remington chambered in a Model 70...but the one on the Model 700 Action is so darn accurate!! is the only reason that has stopped me from doing one on the Model 70...

just like handloading, I'm not tied to what the factory might come out with, special runs or not..

On the other hand all you really need is a 30-06 of any model your choice. You know how it is, lets just see it and let the wheels roll. One of those things you just can't live without.

I will echo Seafire here, it is darn easy to rebarrel or rechamber existing rifles to scratch a particular itch. There are lots of good barrels out there, and flocks of good gunsmiths (Some here on the Campfire). Just buy a new or used donor, choose your gunsmith add money ...voila.

Now if you want rifle loonieness at factory prices, well I figure you are doomed to unhappiness...jim wink

SF,

How does your 6.5x57 do compared to a Swede loaded to modern pressures?

I've got a PH mauser action, BEAUTIFUL stock being shaped by Karnis, and am considering one of those two. I like the Swede for old school cool, but a 6.5x57 would complete a collection, stringing together my 257 Roberts and 7x57.

Thanks for the info on the date. Hopefully they will be close to this time. I have high expectations let's see what they give us.
