I have been running a 24" barreled 300 rum for years. It works and gets more velocity than a win mag or weatherby all things being equal.
I love the guys that speculate on what a 24" barreled RUM will and wont do that havent used one... BWalker did someone post who has not shot with both? Who was that! 2MuchGun has that 300 RUM been a good elk rifle for you?
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

28" for a carry gun and at least 30" for a long range gun.

TS300WSM A lot of good responses here, but light on data. If you do a search, I tested this several years ago and posted the results here on the Campfire. One thing that is clear.....GUNPOWDER BURNS LIKE GUNPOWDER IS GOING TO BURN REGARDLESS OF HOW MUCH ADVERTISING IS INVOLVED !!! Figure 18 to 22 fps for every inch of barrel, everything from 223 to 458. I tested the 300 UM with two powders, H870 and H4895. Very slow and very fast. Same results. Charlie

I've been crazy busy the last few years developing the STAR stock. Hopefully things will get back to normal soon. Charlie
