I take Lipitor. I use the heart docs at Methodist De Bakey in Houston. They told me Lipitor helps to clear plaque from arteries. They said they had done a lot of studies and when you lower cholesterol to a low level plus Lipitor this happens. Take it for what it's worth. Hasbeen Been on it since my heart procedure 2 1/2 years ago. After 4 heart attacks and getting the stent in my heart, I was willing to listen to my cardiologist. I figure he knew more than I did. Quit smoking. My cholesterol was 239. Today it's under 120. I don't care for Lipitor, but it beats the alternative. QUIT SMOKING? It took you 4 heart attacks to realize that smoking clogs your arteries? Your cardiologist never told you? I think the nicotine restricts the blood flow. Causes year heart to work like your walking up stairs all the time. Hasbeen Nicotine does restrict blood flow so you're halfway right. The big problem is that nicotine is a poison that damages the interior of your arteries. Your body reacts by depositing cholesterol in your arteries to prevent more damage. Everybody long term smoker I know (or knew) has high blood pressure, circulation problems, heart disease and lung damage. http://www.heart.org/HEARTORG/Healt...ease_UCM_305187_Article.jsp#.V2F5D8v2Zdg

Here's an interesting article on the cause of heart disease. It's worth a read. I've not yet discussed this with my doctor & I am on a statin. https://www.sott.net/article/242516-Heart-Surgeon-Speaks-Out-On-What-Really-Causes-Heart-DiseaseJerry

a smoker has no one to blame, but him/her self. I should know, I smoked two to three packs of unfiltered Pall Mall, Camels, and Luckys for 25+ years. I won the health lotto though, and suffered no long term effects after I quit. Smoke free for over 20 years now.

It also killed many other relatives and a lot of close friends.

If anyone thinks Niacin doesn't hurt you or have side effects, talk to the ones who get flushing that feels like a torch running across the back of your neck.
I have had two cardiologist and my PCP tell me statins do not get rid of placque, it only stabilizes it so it is not as likely bto move and it also reduces inflammation. If it got rid of it after 15+ years,I should not have any,but I do.

I take Pravastatin Sodium, 40mgs, once a day. Last Monday, I went in for a checkup. My TC=100, HDL=41, LDL=46, TRG=61. I don’t have any of the side effects that some people have.

Take aspirin with the niacin and the flushing will not occur. The flushing in and of itself is not harmful. Providing aspirin is something in their particular case that is not contraindicated. A little bit of niacin goes a long way.
