My buddy was a medic in Vietnam, he got called home when his father died, (only son). He wanted badly to bring a 1911 home.
Had to stand in formation with his duffle bag open. Guy walked up and down the line and just tapped the top of the open bag.

Hey Dan, in your last pic how did you know "1" was my first calls sign? ‘Cause I’m psycho, er, I mean psychic. 🤪
I am..........disturbed.

99.99% of us had to go through the military version of customs before we left VN and again when we hit Oakland. Quite frankly most of us wanted to get home and usually avoided doing stupid stuff like that so that we wouldn't be stopped or delayed enroute. People hear or read about some isolated occurrence like this fingers & ears crap and think that it's commonplace - no wonder folks think so little of us VN vets. I had a stack of paperwork nearly 1" thick to get a Russian made sniper rifle through both military and US customs @ Travis AFB. No problems getting out of country or from Okinawa. I was stopped while openly hand carrying (no case) it through San Fran airport at least a dozen times by local LE. When actually boarding the plane to fly home, the Captain of the plane greeted me with a smile and asked about the previous owner, I told him he hadn't been a very good shot.
