My old huntin truck rather abruptly schit the bed on the way out hunting the other day. Lucky I wasn't up in the mountains somewhere w/o cell reception. As it was, AAA handled it beautifully and got the rig towed to the shop. First shop said the cylinders were "full of water" and the engine needed replacing (199,000 miles). Wanted to replace it with another 3.0 V6 and assumed it needed a clutch so would replace that too. Doesn't need a clutch. In fact they replaced it themselves just a few thousand miles ago, but whatever. Instead I decided a long time ago when the time came I'd upgrade to a 3.4 V6 so I called the shop that put the offroad equipment on the truck when I purchased it. They offered to find a donor 3.4 motor plus the other parts needed, rebuild it, and install it for $2K less than shop #1 wanted for a new 3.0. If I want I can add a supercharger for another 75 hp. When I got to shop #1 to trailer it to shop #2, I was surprised they said it still ran. Cylinders full of water don't run, but again, whatever. Drove it on the trailer and dropped it off so it's official. Roy's old huntin' truck gets new a life. Was forced to drive our other Toyota, a 2009, out hunting yesterday and I made the right decision, I can't stand the newer trucks. Too many reasons to go into why but these old Toyotas just make better off road trucks. Looking forward to having another 40 hp plus gaining 1 or 2 mpg. Down the road, if I want the super I can go that route. Laugh all you want, I love my old truck and wouldn't take a newer one for it straight across.

Put the supercharger on it. You will never regret having extra power driving in the mountains.

0Just saying, you used to be able to get a Toyota diesel engine and transmission, on a pallet. I think the wiring and computer was included. Been a long time since I looked at such things. Came from overseas somewhere. miles
Look out for number 1, don't step in number 2.

I love my Tacoma. It doesn't have any bells and whistles but it does what I need it to do. Its my daily driver/hunting truck. My only complaint is its just got a 5 foot bed but if I need more room, I just hook on to my trailer and use it. If it dies on me, it will get repaired. Fixing my Tacoma id cheaper than a new truck and I haven't seen many I like better than my Toyota.

You don’t do chit all day why don’t you do it yourself?? Show consuela that you can be useful around the house.
Then STFU. The rest of your statement is superflous bullshit with no real bearing on this discussion other than to massage your own ego. Suckin' on my titties like you wanted me.

3.4 swap out is going to need a new wiring harness that works with OBD.
I wanted to do that on my 3.0 years ago, found a company that made aftermarket harnesses but they were backed up and stopped taking orders
another option is to make one, a few DIY threads out there on how to do it. In the end my 3.0 was still good and I just passed on the headache.
also the hood is going to need to modification

I have had a 4runner with that 3.4l six since 1998 with 268,000+ miles on it now, and my grandson drives a Tacoma with that engine with over 500,000 miles on it. You will not regret going to the 3.4. As far as the supercharger, I always wanted one but could never pull the trigger. A super charger may shorten the life of the engine somewhat but it may be worth it for the power.

Your one and only (potentially) redeeming quality was that rig.
And then you reveal that you did none of the work yourself, and it has had the 3.NO the whole time.
LOL

Roy,
Why did you fill the cylinders with water? And who depends on cell service and AAA to take care of them’? #oregonstrong

The heads and gaskets on the 3.0 are notoriously bad and have a known history.
I'm sure Firenoballz ignored the fugk outta that too.
LOL
Extra points on AAA.

I pulled the alternator out of the 97 4Runner this morning. They are pricey. I am replacing it with another Denso. Cheapest I found was Rock Auto. 190 with tax delivered. Probably won’t bother sending the core back. It is a 30 buck discount but at least 10 bucks to send it back.
Anybody use Rock Auto Parts on a regular basis? Good company? I like OEM parts for my 4Runners and usually get them with an online order discount from my dealer and no shipping.
