I used to drive on the exit ramp on the Will Rogers turnpike, to save the dime.

First time driving OTR. I was up front and told the " first seat" I didn't have a lot of experience driving in big towns.
Just coming into LA, No.1 had been driving a while.
My turn! 🤯
I'm in a cab-over Pete with a 48" reefer.
Our destination was a warehouse on "Colesium Way" in Oakland.
I'm in the middle of about 6 or 7 lanes and the exit for Colesium Way was the next exit. Try as I might, no way could I get over without running over a BUNCH of people.
Go down to the next exit, U-turn and come back.
Next exit? Another exit for Colesium Way!
I get off, but the U-turn was impossible....so I take a right.
Little bitty, tiny streets!
About two blocks down, a larger thoroughfare pops up and I take another right.
By this time, I'm sweating like a pig and nervous as a long tail cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
A couple of blocks down and I see a smallish building, surrounded by semi's.
Some driver is trying to get back out in traffic, so I stop to block traffic for him. I'm able to slide right into the vacant spot!
WHEW!!!!!
I wake up No.1!
I've stumbled into a truck stop.....3 blocks from our destination! 😲

Convoy at least 60 vehicles long, last vehicle I hung a sign on the back that said "show us your tits". About a 7 hour drive with two stops. Saw a lot of boobs between stops. At the stops, we got a lot of disapproving frowns from old folks and young parents haha

I saw one in the 90s on I-10 headed into AZ… on the back of the trailer it said “Leg and Breast Examinations 65’ Ahead”. Damn driver looked something strait out of ZZ Top

I had most of Brother Dave's stuff memorized, back in the late 1950s and early 60s. "How long can you tread water?" "If you ain't John, I'se gone!" "Little David invented rock and roll- - - -he taken the rock, and rolled the giant!"

I also enjoyed Bro Dave’s timeless quips. Like, “Sure unemployment is high; there’s TRASH that just don’t wanna work!” Still true today and worse.

Something i don't miss about long haul.

Sure would have been nice to have had smart phones, Google earth, and Sirius
back then. Damn glad we didn't have the current HOS and ELD.
