Honestly, Lebel rifles deserve to be dropped, repeatedly.

Actually, the Lebel was invented to make the joke make sense since the joke preceded it.

Most of the cowardly French jokes came from the Vichy in WWII who kowtowed to the Nazis. On the other side was the resistance. Those guys, and women, were incredibly daring. Many paid the price but they kept on resisting.

Also refers to WW I French troops who were tired of being sent on suicide attacks and refused to go over the top. I have never had an issue with French troops, but the French officer corps has always been suspect.

Actually, the Lebel in 1886 was the pinnacle of military rifle design using the first smokeless powder round and holding a 10 round magazine capacity. It spurred an arms race in Europe in an effort to match it capabilities. It was soon outdistanced by the Mauser and Lee Enfield. And no I wouldn’t buy one even if it wasn’t dropped.

The Jedburgh teams aren't in any movies that I recall seeing. They were the precursor to Special Forces. The French people when armed took back a lot of their country. Made Patton look even better than he was. Being a prima donna he just smiled. There are some books out there, read 'em.
