Free to read on Nitro Express forum “ In Africa by John T. McCutcheon”. What a safari was like in the early 20th century. I found it interesting to read that Lions and Leopards were considered vermin and had no bag limit. McCutcheon’s safari actually met and did some hunting with Teddy Roosevelt’s safari. Has some cool pictures too.

I recall that Finn Aagaard wrote about his Father shooting lions as vermin in Kenya with a long barreled Mauser of some sort.

Imagine a time machine bringing you back there and then with all your rifles and ammo-a nice farm there too.

Yes. The early folks that went over for a year or two felt sorry for those that only had a couple months available. Those were also the days when folks put 20+ balls from a 4-bore cap lock into an elephant, and it still escaped.

Just an FYI - You can get this book for 10 bucks or so on Amazon, mine's in the mail (don't like reading books digitally).
PS: Thanks for the recommendation

“Hunter” by J.A. Hunter is a very good book also. What a magical time and place in Africa for a boy to grow up in.

Safari, a Chronicle of Adventure by Bartle Bull. It's a history of safaris going back to 1836, involving extensive research with quotes and pictures--drawings, paintings and photographs. It's a larger-format book of almost 400 pages. It's not only an excellent read itself, but provides references to many other books that will add to the list anybody might want to read/buy. And used copies can be ordered for as little as $10....
