Your date code says 1988 and the C prefix is the right prefix for that date.
The only version the of the M700 chambered in 35 Whelen that year was the limited Classic. Plus your rifle is now a blind box ADL. So that’s not the original stock for the rifle.

You’re right, the bluing is more of a matte than the higher sheen finish of the Classics.
My guess is previous owner has had it reblued and installed either a FS or RS stock. The FS stocks were either gray or a different camo pattern than the OP’s stock. But the stipple looks similar to the FS or RS finish. The RS was painted a solid gray, as were many of the FS stocks.
More RS stocked M700’s were sold than FS rifles. Also the AS stock replaced the FS and RS stocks a year or so later, but I don’t think they were painted, instead were left in the raw like the later tupperware stocks.

Both of my 35 Whelen LE Classics serial #s start with C628, so it was most likely refinished & restocked somewhere in the last 36 years.

Restocked and given a matte finish is my guess. Still a cool find!!

Cheek piece or not? Any sign of a grip cap? And what’s approximate weight?
Looks nicely done. Congrats.

I would wager that it came out of Remington's Custom Shop. My dad is from Ilion and a childhood friend of his worked in the Custom Shop around that time. I dunno how much they still correspond but I can ask him.

If it was a custom shop rifle, it would simply have the chambering stamped on the rear left just in front of the serial number.
