I need a scope for a rifle that has no frills, simple duplex style reticle (illuminated? ) and would be a good all-around scope for mountain hunting in the southern Appalachian‘s. I seldom shoot more than 100 yards at an animal but would love to be able to shoot out to 250 yards without dialing anything. I’ve got my Mt. Ascent 280 Ackley shooting 140 grain Accubonds 3160 and would love to just be able to set and forget for Whitetail hunting. Also the occasional hog.

There seem to be 1 million options and I’m out of the game on this type of purchase so help! Looking in the $500-$1000 dollar range.

"Simple" would be a Burris FFII 3-9x40 with ballistic plex for $130.00. Exorbitant is what you are looking for..

Simple. Not cheap. I want something that will hold up and last and is also good build quality. Don’t need to spin turrets and adjustable parallax not. But I want good glass.

There's a Zeiss Diatal Classic 7x50/#60 (illum.) in the classifieds right now. I owned it for a few months, and it's an exceptional scope. And the seller is a great guy to deal with.

It's also lightweight and has a terrific hunting reticle. If a fixed power scope would work for you, this one is a great deal.

Should be able to come-up with something good.

So you prefer a simple Plex reticle no BDC type reticles correct?

I saw a Bausch and Lomb Elite 4200 2.5-10x42 for $169.00 the other day that would work just fine. Like I said, your price is exorbitant.. This is coming from a guy that probably has worse eyes than you do. I get by just fine with Burris FFII's..

You want a Vortex Razor HD LHT? MY buddy said he'd sell you one for $1,500.00 if you want it..

Any decent 2.5-10 x40 or 42 will cover all your needs. From up close and personal to 500 yards on game. I have also come to prefer 30 mm tube vs 1".
Meopta, leupold, vortex viper, tract. These are just a few. All come with basic reticle.

All of them do something better than the 30-06, but none of them do everything as well.

Look at the Vortex LHT (Light Hunter Tactical) scopes, they are really light.

If you don't need to dial, you have many good options that don't require you spending $1,000.00 unless you want to. With your stated range, I'd sight in 2" high at 100 yards and let her bump.

A BDC reticle would be OK, as well. Just thinking A Plex style would be simpler. But if you’ve got something you’d recommend I’d love to hear it.

I definitely would love to save some money so this is great. I am looking at several mentioned so far and they all seem to be well under $1000.

Have lost track of the Burris Fullfield II and E1 scopes I’ve had, and still have. Not my choice for dialing, but all have adjusted properly, and others, notably Mule Deer, say they dial fine and hold up, and anyway you said you don’t want to dial. Just looked a couple of places and Natchez has some really good prices on them, including the E1 3-9x50 for $100. I put one of those on a heavy-barreled AR for futzing around at the range and maybe varmints and it’s been just fine so far. There are lots of opinions on the two Ballistic Plex choices, and given the choice I like the regular over the E1, but do fine with either. Amazon has good prices on them too, just watch out for possible shipping charges here and there. I slightly prefer the E1 because it has a regular power ring instead of a turning eyepiece, but it’s not a big deal.

I also like the Trijicon Accupoint 3-9x40 w/green dot duplex for about $650, and the Tract Toric 2-10x42 with T-plex for $694, direct or from Amazon, if you really want to spend more money. They are worth it, only you can decide if the slightly better glass is visible to your eye. The Accupoint dot is very handy, and it’s quite light at about 13oz.

I would do a Zeiss Conquest or Meopta Meopro in 3x9x40 or 2.5x10 Great glass at a good value. You can still find them new sub $400

I've picked up a few of the discontinued Burris Fullfield E1 Illuminated 3-9x40 from the Classifieds on here. Usually around $200. It's like a German #4 reticle with an illuminated red dot in the center. Maybe you'd want to try one out before spending $1000?
