I saw an add for one on eBay for $350.00:

"Rare CASE XX Handmade USA Kodiak Bowie Knife 11" w/ Stag Handle & Original Sheath."

So, just for a lark, I offered to pay him an amount I was nearly sure he'd reject ($250.00), and that would be that. Nope. The guy accepted it, and I was stuck.

Pretty cool knife, and I seem to have gotten a good deal on it, so I can't complain. It's a really cool knife, and a real classic.

Here it is next to one of my Case pocket knives, which happens to match it nicely:

I just looked around, and it looks like what I paid is pretty standard, so not such a great deal, but still cool to have.

Nope.

How do I figure out about when it was made? Anyone know? I understand there are ways to tell by what's on it, in terms of dots, stars, no dots, fonts, where certain words are placed, etc..

I got a case xx lock back when my dad passed that was a gift from his employer. Couldn’t find it cataloged anywhere, but did finally figure it out after finding a site dedicated to case collectors. Been 15 years or so back, so I don’t remember the site but they are out there.

I'd like to give you some crap about your new knife, but I got nothing.

The mirror polish on the blade is beautiful. I imagine it looks even better in person.

Nice but how do you NOT post the etch on the obverse side of the knife.

Nice find. We still sell Case Knives at the local mom & pop hardware store. Most are Christmas and Birthday presents, with a few sold to diehard's who have always carried a Case Knife.
Enjoy

Best I've been able to determine thus far, based on blade markings, is that mine was made between 1965 and 1980 so, at minimum, 44 years ago. I guess that makes it a vintage knife. In pretty damned good condition, considering, although I bet most of these are kept as collector's pieces, passed down generation to generation, rather than as field use knives.

LOL. I think I'll skip that, if possible. Imagine showing up for a scheduled fight to the death. That was when ships were made of wood and men were made of steel, as they say.
