Hopefully the criticism and name calling that happens here can take a back seat while I am able to share a small reflection on American History…

Me and Jake were talking about a day trip, but our schedules haven’t matched up yet. With Carol or Penny, we usually would spend 2 or 3 days there! That place just does something to me!
I think it should for everybody, but some folks don’t tune into history like others do.
My teachers often told my Mom and Dad that they had to study American History to stay ahead of me.
It’s been a passion of mine since I learned to read!😀 As a kid I read a heckuva lot more than I ever watched TV!

The 2nd FL inf Reg was burning Harpers Ferry when the battle at Antietam started. The 2nd double timed from Harpers Ferry down the road, wheeled on the run and hit the Union offensive attack. head on, at the Horse Shoe, without stopping or reforming. Importance is they became a unit Lee then used over and over again. Just an oh, by the way.

One day I may find enough data to finish the book I started about the 2nd FL Inf, I have been researching the data for a few years now. Hard to find without reserching letters and diries from both sides.

They are a pretty interesting unit. Perry was the commander of the 2nd, became the commander of the FL Brigade made up of the 2nd, 5th and 7th FL Inf. Perry came down with Yellow Fever just before the FL Brigade was transferred from Anderson's Div to Pickett's Div, the transfer was made the night before Pickett's assault on the Union lines at Gettysburg. Perry would later become the Governor of FL.

That July day, the FL Brigade was on Pickett's right front. According to diries and letters Pickett ordered a left oblique on his right side, just before contact with the Union line, in order to concentrate his force, however, it put his right front units lined up to direct fire from the angle in the stone wall, so that artillery and rife fire could be brought to bear right down the troop lines of marching men in formation. A move to concentrate force, actually created an opportunity to concentrate fire on the formation. Had the stone wall been straight the move and result might have been very different.

Gettysburg was simply a collection of small and major mistakes beginning to end by the CSA forces that piled up to make a mountain that could not be climbed.

Back on top at Cemetery Ridge, looking at how futile Pickett’s charge is, across a mile of open country and cut in half by a road with fences on both sides…

Luckily, I caught this thread. I haven't been to the fire much due to personal troubles.

Thanks for starting this thread Shrapnel, and to all that contribute. Always enjoy history posts.
.
I can hear cracking in some of your voices as your emotions come out in text. History is powerful knowledge that is in short supply for too many Americans today. If every American was required to attend Gettysburg and learn what happened there before they could vote, this would be a much better country. When our history is destroyed, good or bad. we lose who we are and how we came to be.

I pray there is never another "Gettysburg". Sadly, we seem destined to repeat it.

Enjoy your time in Pennsylvania. You are always welcome at my place in the Allegheny mountains.

Reckon if Custer had not stopped Stuart from getting to the union line that Pickett's charge would have succeeded? Where were the reserves to follow up when those few CSA broke through the union line on the ridge? Seems there weren't any.
