I’m sure no other cartridge has killed more game than the 30-06. From deer to elk to moose. Probably right. And it’s had over a hundred years to do so. It’s decades older than other vintage rounds like the .270, much older than the later ones. So, with time on its side and with a stellar performance record, what’s not to like. Others can only try to play catch up. The latest isn’t always the greatest. DF

For years my only two centerfire rifles were a 30 WCF and a 30-06. No flies on the WCF but the head count was 2 to 1 in favor of the '06.

I bet more deer were killed last year with Muzzleloaders than 30-30s. And BTW, I don't hate the 30-30. My first centerfire rifle was a Winchester 94 30-30. I am simply tryjng to be honest about how much it is truly used in the game fields.

I look at it this way, if forced to own only one center fire rifle what would it be, 30/06 heads and shoulders over all the others. Have owed more 06’s for more years than any other caliber, and probably taken more game with one as well. I have hunted alot of far flung places and anywhere they had ammo, they had 06. What else can one say.

I myself still hunt with one every year and have been doing so since the '70's. Season before last my brothers and I got together with a couple friends to do some drives. Among the six of us there were five lever action rifles, three .30-30's, a .35 Remington and a .308 Marlin Express.

Where I live, Blacktail dinks at under 150 yds are what I hunt, too much meat damage with full house loads, so I like the old M-72 GI match load (or Fed GM Match, same-o)...165 gr or 180 plain base of any make, 48 to 50 grs of IMR 4895 depending on brass capacity...gives around 2650, 1 moa in many rifles, minimal meat loss. I've been using the ones I've got for a long time with a handload of 30 grains of 4198 or RL 7. With a 150 grain bullet, and a scope with hash marks, It has plenty of killing power left at 300 yds. Charge within the 30/30 range, but in a bolt action it kicks much less than a Model 94 in 30/30. Have let kids in Scouts load them, with my supervision.. and most kids from 12 years old and up have no problem handling the load. Kicks like a 243 or so. Really don't need full power loads in one for most of my hunting needs... right bullet and your good to go. I personally like 150 gr Ballistic Tip, or 150 grain Hornady SPs.

Got a 30-06 Kimber BGR I’m trying to get a scope on. One of the front mount screws is stripped out, had to get 8-40 bases from Talley and a tap set. I’m eager to see how well it shoots.

The 30 Govt 06 is the cartridge most other cartridges are judged by-at least as to big game. In a pre-64 Model 70, close to perfection beginning in the 1930s. Weight of bullets: 150-225 grains.
