Continued: The excellent express sights are still well above the rail top for sighting. May not be for everybody, but the advantages of the NEAR MFG Picatinny rail are great.

Skinny Sister Mahohbesta is exquisitely sexy: Little Bo Peep co-witnesses well with the current express sights, just need a more visible front bead of same height. The allyuuminneehum Weaver bases will work great with a 6.5 ounce Leupold 2.5x20mm, or a 2-ounce red dot sight, Burris FFIII. Peep and red dot ? Heh-heh-heh. I found that Redfield Bo Peep at Willis Fowler's home basement gunsmith shop in Anchorage, way back in the last century. Phil Shoemaker inspired, of course. Same as on Ol'Ugly.

Riflecrank: is it sacrilegious to own TWO 1965 Win 70 .458 Suoer Grades? I mean, am I a lesser being for having a push feed?!?!? ;0 The sacrilege is in you not picking your Sir Name, Sir. Yes, Sir Ron, that old 'Smith has some skills, sadly he's retired, don't know exactly why he takes work from me every now and then, we're all going to be in trouble when these old 'Smiths and real Barbers retire, i'll be back out in the shop like during kung-flu days with horse shears turning my head into an onion, will not go to a stylist who probably has every boy george album/cd ever produced -puke!-
You're going to chit when you get these rifles scoped up and see how accurate they are ; ] Had that old FN out of the stock once for a good cleaning, no cracks, no splits, she's like that old Montrose song Rock Candy, hard, sweet, and ready!

Sir Jerry, 1954 M70 Taj found making you fidget for a 1956 African or a Bo Peep ? Funny you should mention self-barbering. I used the dog clippers this AM to knock the beard down from 2" to 1/2" and lower my ears a bit with some side-head trimming. I keep doing that until I start getting a mullet and talented Wife offers a styling to remove the long hairs in back. If she is too busy I give myself a burr every six months: January 1 for New Hair's Day and July 4 for Independence from Hair Day. Also funny you should mention taking the rifle out of the stock. I did too and it was as interesting as when Phil Shoemaker showed his circa 1904 original 404 Jeffery. There is one heck of a barrel recoil lug with tie-down screw, as you know, and what looks like skim glass bedding backing the primary recoil lug and a rear pillar. Mauser spacer on the alloy bottom metal acts as front pillar. I will be looking for some steel M98 bottom metal to preserve the original in a safe. Get the replacement engraved and gilded like the original, heh-heh-heh. Bore has been cleaned spotless except for lint and stray dog hairs. The walnut tiger stripes show inside the well sealed barrel channel. The amount of wood surrounding the rear cross bolt is massive. She is a proven shooter by you. Nothing to prove for Mahohbesta. She just falls back together and I torqued the screws thusly: Barrel lug: 26 inch pounds Both action screws: 42 inch pounds. That felt about like you had them. I wiped her with BreakFree CLP all over and then wiped her dry. The only demerits I ever got at West Point during the Vietnam War was for an oily rifle. I learned my lesson.

Both of those rifles are as cool as can be ....
But, I LOVE that Browning.
Ron, where do you think that you’ll find bottom metal that will work out?

Sir Scotty, Enaa baasee'. Dave93, Sunny Hill or Swift Bullet Company's Blackburn bottom metal. Never had a Blackburn, but from the looks of this one for .30-06 (image posted by another happy camper here) the similar for 7mmRM to .458WM ought to be built like the Duane Wiebe stuff that I have tried: That will add some weight to Mahohbesta, in a well balanced manner.

More Hammerella details: Minimal wood removal and skim glass bedding backed up by cross bolts that can be kept tight with a 7/64" Allen wrench: The only thing needing fixing is a dented front of magazine box: Either brother Ballpeen Hammer and sister Skinny Anvil can do it, or I finally get to use my last Duane Wiebe XRM M70 3.6" box. Either way, some form of box front reinforcement is to be finagled.

Here is that special touch: Sir Jerry is donating the front sling base to my favorite charity. I am guessing his Gunsmith used one like that to make the exquisite filler plug.

And now the bedding contact areas top and bottom in toto, the barrel is totally free-floated forward of the action: Sir Jerry left his mark, or his Gunsmith did it to keep things straight with all the other custom stocks in the shop. This might have been conceived as a switch-barrel with those indexing marks on the bottom of the barrel and action. Never fear, it will not be re-barreled or re-chambered to .458 Winchester Magnum Dakota. Seriously.

Hammerella feeds FN solids very well. Easy 3+ 1 four-shooter, with room to spare in the box. Brother Ballpeen will fix the dimples in front wall of box. I do not want to do any shaving of wood from inside of magazine well to make the XRM box fit.

As a side note on the excellent photo journal of these latest two rifles; it is my thought that Sir Jerry has probably left his mark on much in this life. May it be so for us all. F01

Only a little filing with the perfect width precision file moved back and forth along one line was all that was required to make room for the front plate addition. Minimal epoxy dust and walnut dust resulted. Getting the XRM box fitted in would have been nasty to Hammerella's wood. She is perfect now. Ready for a cat fight with any SAAMI .458 Lott hussy.

I have 2, maybe more, at least 2ea, pieces of Swift M70 stainless bottom metal. My less than happy story. It took so long to get them, I forgot that I ordered them. I am talking like a year or more. I never called to inquire after the first 6 month period. Pretty much figured screw it. Plus, before I ordered-- I was told by "a guy" that builds / does metal work on pretty high end custom rifles - I might regret my choice.- Not because of functionality, but the real unfinished state of tool marks. He told me that he sent some back. -- Well, perhaps they sent me his over a year later. Mine are certainly not light polish or bead blast and play. Hell, I ended up ordering and using PT&G. Maybe, one of these days I will do some File work to these Swift bottom metals. The exterior looks nothing like these pictures. And these was Long before the chinese bat flu. I should have sent these back. Not what I would call a finished product.
