Nice Hawk. My first handgun was an 8 3/8" nickel M29-2 I bought new in 1978 at the age of 17. It caused me to buy an RCBS Reloader Special kit soon after. I still have it though the factory swapped out the barrel for a 5" one. I killed my first hog with it outside Hollister California back then.

All my "29"s are 629's and all my 57's are 657's. I tend to shoot my .41's more than my .44's these days, not for any particular reason. Got too many of each and have been going through various schemes in my head to thin the herd down to something approaching practical. As many of us have learned and as paradoxical as it sounds, it's a lot easier to acquire guns than to get rid of them.

I have a 629 barrel is either 5 or 6” never measured. It has a 2.5 Leupold and target grips. I can consistently hit an 8” plate at 100 yards using a polecat to help steady. I just need to find a chest holster.
Full power loads will get your attention

I was shooting handloads that represent the low end of .44 Magnum power potential, just for fun range shooting. The projectiles are Keith style 240 grainers. The ones in the pic look more like commercially cast, bevel base semi-wadcutters. Am I wrong? Like this: vs. Keith style:

A beautiful handgun there and pretty fine shoot’n as well…….Congratulations on both!
My story is similar, after DirtyHarry and of course Elmer Keith’s influence in my early life, I desperately wanted a 29. It didn’t happen! ☹️
Years later, the 629 came out, and I was a bit more comfortable financially and also love SS……so I ended up with an 8 3/8” 629.
I’m a bit hard on firearms, and SS firearms better suit my firearms lifestyle! Perhaps my “only” regret when building my only semi-custom hunting rifle……Winchester hadn’t brought out the SS Model 70 yet! memtb

I remember when the 629 first came out , everybody in Alaska wanted one and they were being scalped for some horribly high prices. I had one on order from a little sporting good shop in Valdez. When it finally came in I traded a 1968 Chevy suburban straight across for it, shop owner needed another truck and I thought I needed the 629. Don’t know who got the better of that deal. That 629 got carried a lot,in a shoulder holster, in the bush as bear back up. Only thing I ever killed with it was a few spruce grouse and some big halibut. Present 629 is a -5 engineering change with 5” barrel, had Bowen slick it up, double action is as sweet as any I have shot. Nice hip holster rig for horse back.

I have a 4 inch nickle 29-2 I bought in 1985 used for $285.00 No telling how many hot rounds I have sent through that pistol in the ensuing years.
