23 rounds in a pistol seemed like a good thing so I bought a PSA Rock 5.7 x 28 and some ammo. It is a large pistol about the size of a g17, thinner than the Glock maybe a little lighter and it was in my hands not as accurate as my G20 shooting 185 XTP’s with as much AA #9 as I could cram into the case. I could produce a 4-5 inch groups at 7 yards with it but of coarse with no recoil. The PSA trigger is worse than a Glock. I sold out of disgust for the precision but was considering the smith 5.7 x28 which requires a special loader to get 22 rounds into its magazine. Let me whip out my loader and load a few more or buy extra magazines at $40 a pop. I have confered with others on the rock 5.7 and the SW 5.7 x 28 and have concluded that with higher price for the ammunition, not gaining anything in accuracy, having the energy of a .380. with it’s only advantage reduced recoil that the 5.7 x 28 is just a shooters rabbit hole. The 5.7 really does not bring anything to the party unless you cannot tolerate recoil.

My buddy, who is with the sheriffs department, carries the 5.7x28 when off duty and when he works security at our church. He said his is very accurate. I'm really pleased with mine. It's the original FN model I've used on rabbits, coons, etc. Everything I've shot has been DRT.

The 5.7x28mm cartridge is known for its unique characteristics and has found favor in both military and law enforcement circles. Here are some points to consider:

Armor-Piercing Capabilities: The 5.7x28mm round is notable for its armor-piercing capabilities. This makes it an attractive choice for specialized units that may encounter armored targets or require penetration through barriers.

Low Recoil and High Capacity: The Five-seven pistol, chambered in 5.7x28mm, offers low recoil due to its design. Law enforcement officers appreciate this feature because it allows for more accurate follow-up shots. Additionally, the pistol’s magazine capacity is typically higher than standard duty pistols, which can be advantageous in certain situations.

Cost Considerations: While the 5.7x28mm cartridge provides unique benefits, it can be more expensive than traditional pistol calibers like 9mm. Agencies need to weigh the cost of ammunition against the benefits of using this caliber.

Law Enforcement Adoption: In the United States, numerous law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Secret Service, use firearms chambered in 5.7x28mm. These agencies recognize the advantages of this cartridge for specific roles.

Stopping Power Debate: Some experts debate the stopping power of the 5.7x28mm round. While it has impressive penetration capabilities, its energy transfer upon impact is less than that of a 9mm round. However, the low recoil allows for faster follow-up shots, potentially compensating for this difference.

In summary, the 5.7x28mm cartridge has gained popularity among law enforcement agencies worldwide, particularly for specialized units. Its unique features make it a viable choice for specific scenarios, but agencies must carefully consider factors such as cost and stopping power when adopting it for duty use.

What police agencies use the 5.7X28?

I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

Cool little cartridge IMO. It was tailored for a specific purpose and never intended to be the “do all reasonably well 30-06” of personal defense or combat.

50 round mags in a compact select fire rifle with a 10.5” barrel and quick and easy follow up shots for non frontline personal with a bullet that could defeat the body armor of its time wasn’t a bad idea. I don’t have a big need for one but I like it for what it is.

It’s no better than a 9mm unless you have reumatoid arthritis and cannot tolerate recoil. Its sure not up to the hype.

If my copy had proved to be more precise I would be all in, but no general information leads me to believe that any of these pistols are designed to be more than service grade accurate

Something over half way thru the 5.7 was compared to 9mm. The comment was made this is the most effective 9mm they had tested. Couldn’t make out the call name for the 9mm. Was it P9 or T9 ? Something like that ? Anybody have a good translation?

My S&W is set up as my house gun/hiking gun. Red dot, laser/light combo. Not super accurate thus far, but easy to rack, dead reliable, no recoil, lots of bullets, very good trigger. I let a young man crack off a mag full the other day and he was really impressed, enough that he’s putting one on his list.

I keep a set of e-muffs right next to where the pistol resides. The little bastard is LOUD, and ought to deafen anyone I shoot at with it, even if I miss………

I have a Kenai rig for hiking/hunting. Keeps the pistol out of the high weeds and ready to hand when sitting or driving.

Ammo can be had now for about $.60 a pop for VMax and $.50 for FMJ from PSA. For SHTF types, you can carry about twice as much 5.7 as 9mm for the same weight.

I really wanted to try the smith as the samples I have seen had triggers much much better than the rock. For a gun like this that shoots as flat as it does, I had really hoped my research would have found better on average accuracy. Then your neutered as you cannot buy the ammo that the cops can buy, but again "its not armor piercing" just politically controlled. I have a feeling the 5.8 x 28 discussions are going to become "the mini 14 discussions of the pistol world" whistle

They may already be that. Matters not to me in either case as I buy and use what I like and what works for me, not according to others’ opinions. Despite the “service grade” accuracy of the S&W, it’s a good choice for me in its current role.

OTOH, for a hunting piece, the .22 magnum looks better than ever with the newer loads. I got 1700fps with the 30gr VMax and about 1250 with 50gr Federal out of a 6.5” Single Six. Still working with that, but both are looking like useful loads.

When I was in the Narcotics Bureau Entry Unit we carried Bushmaster 12 1/2” select fire 5.56 carbines. One guy tried to get P90s for us. I told them no way I’m trading my Bushmaster for a “Pop Gun”. I’ll take the 60 grain Hornady TAP round over the 5.7 for serious work. Also have a friend who carries an FN 5.7 for church security. No thanks to that also. 9mm 147 grain HST in my Sig P365XL for that.
