One of the founding fathers said something to the effect of our constitution is for a moral people. It is wholly inadequate for any other. That is true and there is no doubt morality plays an important role in society. From what I’ve read this is true. However, this statement was based in Puritan theology if memory serves. That being the case, the Puritans, and every other religion and religious movement, Christian or other, who tried to create God’s kingdom on earth utterly failed. This statement includes the misinformed idea that America was God’s shining light on a hill. All governments are corrupted and evil and should never be considered otherwise.

I would define murder as unjustified killing of a sentient being. To determine abortion as murder, we would have to determine at what point an embryo gains sentience. The Road to Awareness
But when does the magical journey of consciousness begin? Consciousness requires a sophisticated network of highly interconnected components, nerve cells. Its physical substrate, the thalamo-cortical complex that provides consciousness with its highly elaborate content, begins to be in place between the 24th and 28th week of gestation. Scientists can’t even define life how can you hold them up as able to define consciousness? Talk about the blind leading the blind. I do not need any scientist to define sentience for me. I know a worm has no sentience. I know a trout, a pheasant or a deer, or cow has no sentience, otherwise I could not kill them and eat them. Therefore, I know that a nervous system less than that of the above named animals can not support sentience. I actually doubt that a full term baby is fully sentient at birth. I believe sentience is acquired gradually through learning. Regardless, I feel it should be a crime to harm a child after birth, or even during the third trimester.

I think I'd put the bar for sentience and consciousness a little lower and say deer and many other animals have at least some form of it. However, I think that type of awareness is not like a light switch that is either on or off, but more of a gradient, like a light switch with a dimmer function. I think based on the neuro development of a 5 or 6 month fetus, it almost certainly has less sentience and consciousness than say... a 14 month old dog one might drag to a gravel pit and shoot in the face. (To use a topical example) So it probably shouldn't be given more moral weight than that.
